- The collection consists of a letter from Alexander P. Stewart to Colonel Andrew J. Kellar, written from the field in Paulding County, Georgia on May 31, 1864 during the Atlanta campaign. Stewart encourages Kellar to join his staff, mentions being attacked by three divisions of Hooker's Corps and repulsed near New Hope Church, and that General Johnston pronounced it a magnificent fight.
Alexander Peter Stewart was born in 1821 and died in 1908. He was a Confederate General and commanded the Army of Tennessee in 1864. Before the war, he was a lieutenant colonel in the artillery, as well as a a professor of mathematics and experimental philosophy at Cumberland University and the University of Nashville. During the war, he was wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga. He fought in the Atlanta Campaign in 1864 and replaced General Polk when the other was killed in ation. He eventually lost command, and ultimately the Confederates lost the war. After the Civil War, he had several careers, all of which he seemed successful at.
