- The collection consists of a roster of companies furnished by Clarke County, Georgia to the Confederate Army, 1861-1865, was compiled by Albert L. Mitchell by the authority of T. P. Vincent, W. H. Morton and S. M. Herrington, County Commissioners in 1903.
The Confederacy raised troops throughout the South; most companies came from individual counties or general regions of certain states. The best known company from Athens, Georgia (Clarke County) was Cobb's Legion, raised by Thomas Reade Rootes Cobb during the summer of 1861. The companies suffered heavy casualties in numerous different battles, including the Seven Days Battles, Crampton's Gap, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Brandy Station, Gettysburg, Knoxville, The Wilderness, and Siege of Petersburg and the Crater.
