- This collection contains a handwritten list of forty-two members of the 1860-1861 junior class of Oglethorpe University with a brief biographical statement about each person stating their occupation or whether they were killed during the Civil War. The three other items in the collection are versions of a company history and roster of Company B, 20th Georgia Cavalry Battalion. There are two drafts with marginalia and one final copy. The final copy includes an attached backing paper belonging to "R. R. Marlin, Attorney," State of Georgia, dated 190_. Items in this collection were donated by the same anonymous donor. However, the relationship between the items (if any) is unclear.
The Jeff Davis Legion, 20th Georgia Cavalry Battalion, Company B (originally part of Captain Winn's Company, 1st Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Battalion) was also known as the Liberty Mounted Rangers. The company spent twelve months during 1862-1863 on James Island, near Charleston South Carolina, until it was ordered to Virginia in early 1864. After its officers, Colonel John B. Millen and Major W.G. Thompson were killed at Hawes Shop on 28 May 1864 the surviving members of the battalion were split up and attached to depleted regiments already officered. Company B of the battalion became Company C of the Jeff Davis Legion, Young's Brigade, Hampton's Cavalry commanded by Colonel Fred Waring.
Founded in 1835, Oglethorpe University is located in Atlanta, Georgia.
