- This collection contains a signed photograph of Alexander Hamilton Stephens from around 1874. This photograph was given by Stephens to the donor's grandfather, George Jeremiah Stanford.
Alexander Hamilton Stephens was born on 11 February 1812 in Crawfordville, Georgia. He attended the University of Georgia where he graduated the top of his class in 1832. After teaching for a couple of years, Stephens pursued legal studies and soon began a successful legal and political career. Throughout his career, Stephens served in the Georgia House of Representatives, the Georgia State Senate, U.S. House of Representatives both before and after the Civil War, and he served as the vice president of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Stephens was elected governor of Georgia in 1882 and served until his death in 1883.
