- This collection consists of Civil War letters from L.N. Barlow to his wife, Eliza, written from various stations near Richmond, Virginia, Columbia, South Carolina, Augusta, Georgia, and some counties of coastal Georgia. They largely relate to life in camp, with some mention of skirmishes, etc. There is also an incomplete poem in Barlow's hand. The collection also contains a fragment of a land grant to John Bennett of Chatham County to Lot 22-6-4, Cherokee County, Georgia, signed by John Bethune, Surveyor General, William A. Tennille, Secretary of State, and Wilson Lumpkin, Governor, with pendant seal.
Lucian N. Barlow was a private in Companies B and F, 20th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, during the Civil War. He and his wife, Eliza, lived in Montgomery County, Georgia. A note from his great-granddaughter states that Barlow was killed on his way back to Virginia.
America's Turning Point: Documenting the Civil War Experience in Georgia received support from a Digitizing Historical Records grant awarded to the Atlanta History Center, Georgia Historical Society, Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and the Digital Library of Georgia by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. - External Identifiers:
