- This collection contains the muster roll for Company A, 63rd Regiment of Georgia Volunteers for June 1863. Badges, medals, and ribbons donated with this muster roll have been removed to the artifacts collection at Georgia Historical Society, artifact number A-1175-001. Muster roll, medals, and ribbons were the property of George W. McLaughlin. McLaughlin was a merchant in Augusta who entered the Confederate Army as a private in 1861. He served in the 1st Regiment Georgia Infantry, Company A of the 12th Battalion, Georgia Light Artillery, and Company A of the 63rd Georgia Infantry Regiment (also know as the Oglethorpe Light Artillery of Augusta during the Civil War.) McLaughlin rose through the ranks quickly, making First Sergeant by 1862, Second Lieutenant by November 1863, and First Lieutenant in April 1865. His unit surrendered at Greensboro, North Carolina on April 26, 1865.
The 63rd Georgia Volunteer Regiment of the Confederate Army consisted of both infantry and heavy artillery units. Originally organized in Savannah, Georgia and commanded by Colonel George A. Gordon, the regiment was formed December 23, 1862 by merging several units totaling more than 1,100 men.
