- This collection consists of a ledger from General Hospital No. 4, Confederate States of America, in Richmond, Virginia, July 1863-December 1864, and an essay by Dr. James Bond Read, "Report on Wounds of Large Joints," laid inside the front cover of the ledger. Dr. James Bond Read (1827-1903) was a resident of Savannah, Georgia. He served as the surgeon in charge of General Hospital No. 4. The ledger is divided into several sections: provisions purchased and cash account; account with officers for provisions and board; account current; account for provisions; account of contributions; abstract of provisions; commutation of rations for attendants; return of medical and hospital property; clothing issued; and return of clothing. The essay cites some cases treated in the hospital. It is unsigned; Dr. Read was identified as the author through the index included in MS 169, Confederate States of America Army records.
The General Hospital No. 4 of the Confederate States of America was located in Richmond, Virginia. Also known as the Baptist College Hospital and the Richmond College Hospital, it was taken over by the CSA in 1862 for operations on soldiers with joint injuries.
