- This collection consists of two letters of Governor Joseph E. Brown concerning Savannah, Georgia in the Civil War. Item one, dated May 11, 1861, is an executive order by Governor Brown announcing the appointment of Ira R. Forten, Special Agent to examine munitions at the State Arsenal in Savannah, Georgia. The second item, dated January 29, 1866, is a letter from Joseph E. Brown to Charles J. Jenkins recommending George Hillyer to prosecute claims against the U.S. for cotton burned at Savannah. Alexander H. Stephens adds his endorsement to this letter. This collection also contains an engraving of Governor Joseph E. Brown, dating from circa 1860-1870. The folder containing the engraving is noted as "VM" (visual material) in the collection inventory.
Joseph Emerson Brown (1821-1894) was the governor of Georgia during the Civil War, Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court, 1868-1870, and a U.S. Senator from Georgia for two terms in 1880.
