- This collection consists of John Whitehead's 1857 last will and testament. His will divided his private property and slaves among his children. His son, John R. Whitehead, and son-in-law, Thomas Berrien, who was a county commissioner and judge in Burke County, served as executors of the will. J. Edward Garlick signed the will as ordinary.
John Whitehead (1783-1857) was born in Burke County, Georgia, to Mary Wynne and Amos Whitehead. He was a plantation and slave owner who resided in Burke County and owned additional property in Bath, Richmond County, Georgia, and in Florida. According to the 1850 U.S. Census Slave Schedule, Whitehead owned forty-two slaves. Whitehead's first marriage to Abigail Lewis Sturges (1798-1824), circa 1816, produced two daughters: Eliza Alice (1818-1896) and Mary Dowse (1822- 1844). He married Julia Maria Berrien (1801- 1857) in 1825 and they had seven children: John Randolph, Charles, Ruth (Berrien), Valeria (Burroughs), Julia Amanda, Eliza (West), and Philodea (Neely). Additional biographical information about John Whitehead has not been determined.
