- This collection consists of a letter written by Nathaniel Wiley Harbin to his father about the First Battle of Manassas. Harbin gives an account of the battle, where he acted as a "skirmisher," and describes the rout of the Federal army and the supplies they abandoned during their retreat. Harbin includes a casualty list for his company and writes about the capture of Federal prisoners.

Nathaniel Wiley Harbin was born about 1841 to Caroline M. Reeder and Thomas W. Harbin in South Carolina. He joined Company E of the 4th Regiment of South Carolina Infantry as a sergeant, and was promoted to 3rd lieutenant on October 15, 1861. Harbin participated in the First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run). Harbin died during the Civil War. Additional biographical information about Nathaniel Wiley Harbin has not been determined.
