- This collection contains five letters written by George Hewitt Daniel to his daughters, Emmaret and Virginia. These letters were written between January 24, 1862 and July 3, 1864 both before and during Daniel's service in the 8th Georgia Infantry (St. Guards) Company I. Adj. The first letter in the collection was written prior to Daniel's enlistment and includes details on his visit to the battlefield during the battle of Chickasaw Bayou2. With this letter he also includes a copy of the official report of Colonel Robert J. Henderson of the 42nd regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry that documents the causalities of the battle. Other letters in the collection were written from Rome, Georgia and mention his probability of being forced to fight in the Battle of Chattanooga and the decreasing morale of the Confederate army. The collection also includes a newspaper clipping from Augusta, Georgia that was written May 1, 1864. The article contains a speech made by Zebulon B. Vance. Daniel's letters also include instructions to his daughters and his Cousin Zac to maintain his farm and home in Covington, Georgia.

George Hewitt Daniel was born October 2, 1816 in England. He married Huldah Battle Colley, the daughter of Joel Colley (1776-1851) and Mary "Polly" Tillery (1783-1864) of Newton County, Georgia, who was born on December 29, 1821 and died on April 25, 1857. The couple had four daughters, the first two of whom Emma May (1843- 1845), and Mary Colley (1857), died in infancy. Little is known about his younger daughters Emmaret (1846-?), and Virginia (1850-?). Daniel was a merchant and lived with his wife in Covington, Georgia. He served in the 8th Georgia Infantry (St. Guards) Company I. Adj. from 1863-1864. George Hewitt Daniel died on July 22, 1864, and is buried in the Colley-Hight Cemetery in Newton County, Georgia.
