- This collection contains five orders assigning Sergeant Cameron to various duties. Three of the five orders were written in Georgia in 1864 and 1865. There is also a certificate of discharge written in June 1865 in Washington, D.C.

John T. Cameron was born in 1836 in Virginia to John and Nancy Cameron. During the Civil War, he served as a Sergeant in the 39th Regiment of the Iowa Infantry Volunteers. He enrolled in service on August 20, 1862. He saw duty in Georgia in 1864, and he was discharged on June 5, 1865 in Washington, D.C. Prior to the war, he married Rachel (last name unknown), who was born in Ohio in 1834. In 1880, the couple lived in Howard County, Iowa, where Cameron worked as a wheat buyer. Additional biographical information has not been determined.
