- Description:
- Located at: Greene Street between Liberty and Clarke Streets, Milledgeville, Ga.
Two-story wood frame house with high basement, featuring a two story portico with entablature and pediment supported by four heroic fluted Ionic columns. Second floor balcony and first floor porch extend across the front of the house to either side of the portico. The pediment features an arched window. Balcony and porch are enclosed by a balustrade. Entrances on balcony and porch feature fanlight transoms, and the porch entrance also has sidelights. The columns are hand carved solid wood. The four front rooms, upstairs and downstairs, are original, and the other rooms and porches were added. The house was heavily damaged in a fire at one time. The house was rented as a temporary residence for the Governor of Georgia until the Governor's Mansion was ready for occupancy. Rent was paid to H. P. Ward in 1838 and to Jeremiah Beall in 1839. Peter J. Cline became the owner shortly after the Civil War. The lamp post in front of the house was a gift to Peter J. Cline from a relative; it had been found under a house in Savannah, and its age is unknown. The lattice wall of hand-made bricks in front of the house once enclosed the entire block on which the house stands.
