- Located at: 2808 Eighteenth Avenue, Columbus, Ga.
Two-story stuccoed brick house with a semi-raised basement, featuring a two-story veranda on three sides, supported by Doric columns, that was added in 1832 by John Howard's son-in-law, Seaborn Jones. Over the entrance is a balcony with a decorative cast iron railing, and a ballustrade runs along the entablature of the hipped roof. In 1878, Captain James Slade bought the house from the Jones estate and opened a select school for young women, which he named "St. Elmo." The property is also known as the Garrard-Slade Place. John Linley writes that the name was changed from El Dorado to St. Elmo because the author of the novel "St. Elmo," Augusta J. Evans, spent much of her childhood and later years in the house. For more information see Linley, John. The Georgia Catalog: Historic American Buildings Survey. Athens, Ga.: University of Georgia Press, c1982, pp. 288-289.
