Gothic stuccoed brick Jewish temple, consecrated in 1878. The temple features an onion dome on top of the Belfry and Gothic arches throughout. The congregation is one of the oldest in Georgia and the third oldest in the United States: its founders, Sephardic and Ashkenazic Jewish settlers, came to Georgia aboard the William & Sarah just a few months after Oglethorpe. Governor Edward Telfair granted congregation Mickve Israel a perpetual charter in 1790. For more information see Linley, John. The Georgia Catalog: Historic American Buildings Survey. Athens, Ga.: University of Georgia Press, c1982, p. 333.
