- Description:
- Located at: Old Phoenix Road, six miles from Eatonton, Ga.
Two-story wood frame Federal style house with a two-story Greek Revival portico, which was probably originally only one story. The Georgia Historical Commission erected a marker here to commemorate the apprenticeship of Joel Chandler Harris, who lived and worked at the plantation as a printer's devil for the Countryman, Turner's newspaper. The house has been completely modernized, and the stucco columns appear to be replacements for older wooden columns. There is a one-story addition at the rear of the house. For more information see Linley, John. Architecture of Middle Georgia: the Oconee Area. Athens, Ga.: University of Georgia Press, c1972, p. 73.
