Wood frame Carpenter Gothic style church featuring a square tower surmounted by a slender pyramidal steeple. The Church of the Redeemer congregation was established in 1863 by two Greensboro families and Civil War refugees from Charleston and Savannah, who gathered for worship at the home of Philip Clayton. Services continued in homes and the town hall until the church was built and consecrated June 14, 1868. The church was designed by J.O. Barnwell of Rome, Ga. Funding to build the church came from Ascension and Epiphany parishes in Washington, D.C. and parishes in Augusta and Savannah. A National Historic Register building, the church was restored in 1990. The adjacent two-story building, the gift of a local bank, is the locus of community ministry.
