View of Thurmond Lake, one of the largest inland bodies of water in the South, created by Clarks Hill Dam. Constructed from 1946 to 1954 for $79 million, the dam stands about 200 feet high by 5,680 feet long, a concrete causeway flanked by earth embankments. It is one of a series of dams built by the Army Corps of Engineers on the Savannah River for flood control, hydro-electric power, and to ensure a minimum river flow at the Savannah River Site of the Department of Energy. Inside the powerhouse are seven turbine/generator assemblies, each capable of producing 44 Megawatts.
