Two-story wood frame house with one-story wings featuring a portico with square columns and a banistered sun balcony above. The central part of the house was built in 1814 for Sarah Porter Hillhouse, who became editor of the Washington Gazette. The house began one room wide, with a shed room in the rear. It consisted of a basement, first floor, and second floor. After the death of Sarah Porter Hillhouse in 1831, David Porter Hillhouse owned the house. Merrill P. Callaway occupied the house from 1843 to 1869, when Gabriel Toombs purchased the house. Toombs added the one-story wings, which he brought from the old Toombs plantation on the Scull Shoals Road. The wings each have a large end chimney and are probably the oldest parts of the house. Toombs also added the porch, columns, balcony and balustrade, and surrounded the house with magnolia trees. Toombs occupied the house until his death in 1901. Mrs. Julia Hardeman Toombs Wood purchased the house in 1936 and renovated it. The property was purchased from the Wood estate in 1985 by T. Marion Slaton. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Slaton and the Slaton family have restored the house to its early Federal appearance. For more information see Newsome, Jane R., ed.
