Text of marker: "McPHERSON'S ARMY AT SNAKE CREEK GAP. A narrow, 3 mi. passage between 2 ridges, begining 1 mi. S. of this marker & ending at the fork of Sugar Valley & Resaca roads. May 8th 1864. While Geary's Div. (20th A.C. Union) stormed Rocky Face Ridge at Dug Gap, 5 mi. N.E., McPherson's Army of the Tenn. (15th & 16th A.C. Union), gained a lodgment in Snake Cr. Gap & held it while the 14th, 20th & 23d Corps [Union] left the Dalton front & marched through the gap.Outflanked in his position at Dalton, Johnston [Confederate] evacuated it, May 12, & withdrew to Resaca, which he defended against Sherman's forces in 2 days of battle, May 14th & 15th. 146-10 Georgia Historical Commission 1953" - External Identifiers:
