Text of marker: "HOUSE - SITE THOMAS V.B. HARGIS. Major Gen. W.T. Sherman's Headquarters May 19-23, 1864. Sherman occupied the Hargis house for three days of reorganization of forces in the campaign that ended at Atlanta. Assuming the Johnston's army had moved, from Adairsville, directly on Kingston & the river crossings S., May 18, led Sherman to concentrate his forces here -- only to discover that Johnston had gone directly to Cassville where, without making a stand, he retreated to Allatoona, May 20th.
