THANK YOU
DOUBLE PLATINUM SPONSOR
The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and Information Technology Services thanks all our sponsors for their generous support of the 2012 USG Annual Computing Conference. Additional sponsor information begins on page 30 of this conference guide.
WELCOME
FORTY FIRST ANNUAL USG COMPUTING CONFERENCE
It's my pleasure to welcome you to the 41st University System Annual Computing Conference at Rock Eagle. Anytime you can get a group of people with a common interest and background together is invaluable.
I hope you've come with the most pressing issues you're facing so we can work together to solve them, both at your institution and across the state. This is the perfect setting for you to engage with your peers in open interaction and exchange to generate ideas and solutions. One of the mottos of Rock Eagle is a shortage of ideas is not the problem!
There are a lot of great changes taking place within the USG, and ITS is aligning its efforts with the Chancellor's priorities and USG initiatives of campus consolidation, Complete College Georgia, data-driven decision making, space utilization, and distance education. ITS will update its strategic plan, in partnership with the institutions and the USO, to align with these priorities. I am excited about these priorities and their potential to transform higher education in Georgia at a fundamental level.
During the next three days, take advantage of everything that's offered. And after this conference ends, you can use the available social collaboration tools so that together we can work innovatively and collaboratively to implement the Chancellor's vision to enhance the USG. This interaction helps to foster and develop communities of practice.
We are fortunate to work in a system that is looking critically at how we educate and inspire the future leaders of Georgia. Thank you for all that you do to enable the success of the USG, and enjoy your time at Rock Eagle!
Sincerely,
Curtis A. Carver Jr., Ph.D. Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia Information Technology Services
Once again it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Rock Eagle 4-H Center for the University System of Georgia's (USG) Annual Computing Conference. Thank you for coming, and we are glad you're here.
This 41st annual conference, a continuation of the ongoing legacy, camaraderie, and knowledge-sharing that is Rock Eagle, brings together participants from all institutions in a natural retreat center that is itself part of the USG. Held in this beautiful fall setting, it is a unique opportunity to share experiences, best practices, and challenges facing technology professionals across our system.
We have a solid technical agenda with more than 90 presentations, workshop sessions, demonstrations, and discussions on the hottest technology issues within the USG and more than 30 vendors exhibiting state-of-the-art products, applications, and services, along with numerous opportunities to network with colleagues and vendors. The wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm shared during these few days contributes immeasurably to our success in improving access, affordability, and accountability in higher education in Georgia, particularly during these difficult economic times.
We're honored and pleased to have Lt. General Russel Honor, U.S. Army (Ret.) give the Lonnie Harvel Keynote Address. Gen. Honor saved a Hurricane Katrina-battered New Orleans in 2005 by taking swift charge of military relief efforts. Drawing on his 37 years of military experience, he addresses how public and private sector businesses and organizations can solve a broad array of issues, from jobs and energy to healthcare and technology, by emphasizing innovation, risk assessment, and social entrepreneurship.
We thank our strategic sponsors for their support. Some exhibitors are new this year and others have generously supported Rock Eagle for more than 20 years. We appreciate them all for joining us.
Sincerely,
Denise Samples Executive Director, Resource Management Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia Information Technology Services

Creating Accessible (PDF) Documents
Janet Sylvia, University of Georgia Web Development Section 508 requires that all website documents be equally accessible to individuals with and without disabilities. This includes word processing files, spreadsheets, presentations, and PDF documents posted on our websites. How do we make this content accessible? In this seminar we discuss general requirements for all documents, and provide checklists for creating and testing specific document types for Section 508 compliance. We also discuss PDF content, one of the most difficult document types to make accessible, in detail, and provide a demo of converting scanned, converted, and original PDF content to an accessible format.

Moving the GeorgiaInfo Mountain: Migrating a Static Unstructured Website to a CMS
Edward Johnson, University System of Georgia Ray Lee, University System of Georgia Next Generation/Classroom Technology
GeorgiaInfo has evolved from a textbook supplement into a heavily-used online almanac about Georgia. It has been redesigned to enhance user experience, improve maintainability, and integrate better with other GALILEO resources. The redesign involved standardizing the content pages and their HTML code as part of migrating the legacy content to the Expression Engine CMS, but also required preserving the widely-used existing hyperlinks. We discuss the planning/managing difficulties and the tough design issues encountered in this challenging project.

In 2009 Columbus State University began creating a Data Warehouse pilot project for admission module in Banner. With the success of the pilot project, CSU partnered with Oracle in 2011 to create a Business Intelligence System that will be a onestop shop for strategic decision making at the institution. In an effort to streamline USG's RPG focus and to embrace data driven management, CSU leadership implemented a Quadra P approach that focuses on people, process, partnerships, and platforms. The first phase of the project which covers RPG, Enrollment, and Faculty information from Banner is now live in production.

Enabling 21st Century Students - Using Echo360 and Smartboard as Tools for Student Preparation in Undergraduate Chemistry Classes
Richard Pennington, Georgia Gwinnett College Next Generation/Classroom Technology One of the main issues facing instructors of 21st century students is that of ineffective student preparation for classes. At Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC), we have tried to overcome this considerable problem via the design and use of interactive preparatory podcasts, which the students can view as part of their class preparation. This presentation explains the rationale behind and the design of these podcasts, and also demonstrates, via the use of student comments, the effectiveness of their use in freshmen and sophomore chemistry classes.

Mobile First! Responsive Design Building Techniques with Drupal
David Wagner, Georgia Institute of Technology Web Development By 2015, mobile devices will generate 50% all U.S. network traffic. For years, most websites have been designed exclusively for desktops, but that may now be an increasingly backwards design philosophy. Designing for mobile first opens new growth opportunities and leads to a better overall user experience for any website on any device. In this presentation, we explore Drupal's Responsive Design building techniques which, along with the Omega theme and Display Suite that delivers responsive images to different device sizes, allow the experienced web developer to build websites that work on desktops and all mobile devices.

Using Ruby on Rails to Make Sense of Banner Data
Angel Brown, Georgia Gwinnett College David Santos, Georgia Gwinnett College Web Development Banner is a complex system, and making sense of the Banner database can require a good bit of investigation at times. The development team at Georgia Gwinnett College often needs to draw upon Banner data to create applications that make life easier for faculty, staff, and students. This talk describes how we use a Ruby on Rails project to import and model only the Banner data we need normalizing the data and making it easy to mashup with other third-party data, while giving us a clean model schema on which to build our custom applications.
Be sure your smartphones, tablets, pagers and other mobile electronic devices are turned off during sessions.

Increasing Prospect Conversion Rates with Oracle WebCenter
Melinda Seifert, Oracle IT Tools and Standards Many prospective students will go elsewhere if they can't find the right information or if your Web presence isn't linked into their favorite social networking tool. Oracle's WebCenter Sites provides institutions with real-time targeted personalized content and messages that drive student engagement and conversion rates. A static Web site now becomes dynamic and an effective marketing tool that pulls prospective students through a well-thought-out click path, effectively converting them from Web browsers to enrolled students. We demonstrate user generated content, social networking integration, integration with CRM applications, and web content creation and publishing.
