WELCOME ...
...TO THE UNIVERSITY SYSTEM OF GEORGIA'S
33R0 ANNUAL COMPUTING CONFERENCE
Thank you for attending the University System of Georgia 's 33rd Annual Computing Conference. This year's conference includes 98 sessions covering a wide range of interests such as networking, data management, IT security, Web development, helpdesk, leadership development, and techniques for teaching with technology. The broad scope of these sessions will allow you to pursue your professional goals and meet other USG IT professionals from across the state.
The rapid changes in technology provide many opportunities to improve support to the University Systems primary missions of instruction, research, and public service. It also provides many challenges. We must ensure sound planning to maximize the return on investment of our limited resources. This involves procuring the right technology (not necessarily the cheapest), investing in training to maximize the productivity of personnel, consolidating support for technical infrastructure to reduce duplication of services, and developing strategies to support the wide variations in technology available to our students and others.
This year we welcome more than 650 attendees and over 35 vendors for our biggest year yet. Your participation ensures the success of the conference as we learn about new technologies and share ideas in order to meet the University Systems goal to create the technical foundation for learning without limits.
Thank you for joining the tradition,

Randall A. Thursby Vice Chancellor/CIO Office of Information and Instuctional Technology Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia

IP Telephony
Bankers Track: Communications-Security Level: Advanced
IP telephony, also known as voice-over IP, is an application that carries telephone calls over networks originally designed for data. The cost benefits for educational institutions of merging voice and data services onto one network can be dramatic. Cisco Catalyst switches provide the advanced QoS features needed to support IP telephony and are available with network- based inline power support for Cisco IP phones, so that separate power outlets are not required in each room . Cisco Systems is a recognized leader in network convergence . Cisco AWID (Architecture for Voice, Video and Integrated Data) provides an open, standa rds-based foundation that makes it makes it easy to roll out IP telephony services and other Internet-based applications.
Anthony Ware, Cisco Systems
Security Primer
Hastings Track: Security Level: Beginner Networks and servers are more vulnerable than ever to attack , from the outside as well as from within. Institutions, especially higher education , are probed daily for weaknesses . Security is no longer a "nice to have", but rather a "must have." Security measures and practices should be built into network and system design, engineering, and operations. This session introduces network and server administrators to best- practices for protecting their networks and servers. Topics to be discussed include the following : The Threat; Network Design ; System Hardening; Vulnerability Notifications; and Open-source Tools .

Packeteer Packetshaper Tricks: Implementing A Penalty Box
Bankers Track: General Networking Level: Intermediate Locating the specific IP number associated with a problem computer can be difficult, but network administrators can use tools such as Packeteer Packetshaper to isolate problematic addresses . By placing the suspect IP in a " penalty box," it's easier to get the offending user's attention . The Packetshaper can selectively redirect HTTP traffic to a specific error page, and limit any burden to the network via bandwidth caps and protocol filters. Custom web tools let you delegate the grunt work.

The Course Mapping Tool Introduction
International Paper 3 Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology Level: Beginner Advanced Learning Technologies has developed a tool that organizes existing face -to-face courses into a detailed course map before transition to the online environment. Using a wizard style approach, faculty enter the components of their existing face-to-face courses into a course structure. The tool can also be predefined to offer suggestions on alternate instructional strategies for components that might not easily transition to the online environment. The end result is a detailed instructional course map that can be exported into Word and then more fully developed . This tool will soon be available to all USG personnel.

Michael Bracewell, Board of Regents
Usability Testing: The Missing Link to Your Users
Krannert 3 Track: W eb Development Level: Begi nner When you field the same calls to technical support, you may want to blame your users for not seeing " the obvious ." The same is true for your students when they repeatedly send the same_request to help them find something in your online course that's " right in front of their noses." These are but two examples of the all -too-common problem of learning what doesn 't work for your users when it's too late to fi x it. If only you'd done a little usability testing when the product (courseware, website, intranet, software) was in development. Then you would have learned from your users about their experiences and whether your product makes sense to them and-even more important-satisfies them . This session defines usability testing, explains how to do it, and places it within a user-centered design process . The goal of the session is to give attendees the information and the incentive to get started anywhere in the design process so that users become a critical part of that process .

Security and Intrusion Prevention

Track: Teaching and Learning with Technology Level: Beginner

Bankers Track: Security Level: All

Increasing use of computer-enhanced materials in science classrooms parallels current thinking that computer technologies readily engage students and create environments for learning.

Security is no longer a network-only proposition; data must also be protected where it resides-the endpoint. As recent high-visibility attacks such as Code Red and the SQL Slammer worm demonstrate, traditional technologies are limited in their ability to combat the effects of new and evolving types of intrusions. Network Admission Control (NAC) is an industry-wide collaboration effort led by Cisco Systems to ensure that every endpoint complies with network security policies before being granted access . The objective is to limit damage from viruses and : worms. The Cisco Self-Defending Network program improves a : network's ability to identify, prevent, and adapt to threats.

However, their worth remains unproven when used to stimulate non-science majors in the sciences. We assessed student perceptions and performance using a CD-ROM delivery of laboratory materials and discovered numerous learning barriers that produced lower lab grades for students using a CD-ROM lab manual in comparison to the print version . The results of a semester-long study are presented with implications for the future of computer technologies in this arena.
