COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURAL AND ~NVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES (JNIVERSIT'Y OF GEORGIA, ATHENS, GEORGIA

DATE OF REP.ORT TO COMrv11SSJON: January 9, 2018

PROGRESS REPORT:

The research, completed in 2016, on mosquito ba~kpack misting treatments in Georgia

demonstrated that we used a rnngc between 1 and 4 liters of product during a 'typical'

residential treatment. That graduate student work also showed how customer satisfaction

with a monthly service, in neighborhoods do.lllinated by the Asian Tiger mosquito (Ades

albopictus), is clearly dependent on inteniening with larval breeding sites. 111is year, 4

.students in .the.program .were_intems al thc.NMA annualmeelingin..Ba.ltimorc_and 3. _

attended the Southeastern Dranch wllile 2 spoke at the National HSA meeting in Denver.

The research program graduated 011e Masters student wbo worked on the pattern of

movement by groups ofsubterranean termite workers through tunnels in a laboratory

.setting. Th.at work showed termites aggregated within 24 hoursof starting an

experimeriL, There were 33 groups tested with 52% ofthe groups aggregating at the food,

21 in an empty chamber and the remaining 24% moved aggregation sites over the 4

days oflhe experiment. Termite movement through tunnels is directed by a message (not

yet identified)at the junction oftwo tunnels. This data set is still being analyzed and

results are expected to be published later this year. The graduate students continue work

on ants, termites, and output(volume and <listribtitionofproduct) from hand-held

compression sprayen,. Fieldwork on drywoo<l and subterranean tennites continues with

demonstration projects on University property. lbose demonstration projects have

generated ioforma\iou consistent with previous field work showing u lack'Of territoriality
and in subterranean temJites and importance of placing maintaining effective barriers

(physical or soil treatments) and bait placements. lbis work illustrates the utility ofa

subtenancan t.crmite inspection program aimed a-t recognizing and intervening at critical

elements of construction to keep structures free from infestation.

EXPENDITURES:
Graduate student stipend expenditures were approximately $114,000 in addition to $14,000 for undergraduate student workers untl $22,000 for supplies and equipment. The State Structural Pest Control Commission reseurch fee was used for all of the undergraduate student salary and a portion ofthe graduate student stipends, equipment and supplies the remainder was paid through extramural grants..

PLANNED RESEARCH:

We plan to address the following rese-J.rch areas over the next year: (1) the ecology and distribution of ants on Georgia coastal island dunes (2) the distribution of tem1ites in the slate of Georgia (3) ~ubterrancan term.ite respiration and digestion ofwood (4) distribution and amounts ofproduct delivered by hand-held compr~ ion sprayers.
