For 74 years, local volunteers from your communities have protected and conserved a natural resource we all depend on - the soil. The Middle South Georgia Soil and Water Conservation District presents its 2013 annual report of accomplishments to preserve the very ground we walk upon.
In 1937, President Roosevelt wrote the governors of all states recommending legislation that would allow local landowners to form Soil Conservation Districts. The Middle South GA Soil and Water Conservation District was organized on March 16, 1939, and comprises Ben Hill, Brooks, Colquitt, Crisp, Irwin, Thomas, Tift, Turner and Worth counties.
Two volunteers, or district supervisors, from each county, serve on the 18member board. One supervisor is elected by county voters for four-year terms; the other supervisor is appointed by the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission for two-year terms. Over 370 supervisors serve in Georgia alone.
The USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, by written agreement with and at the request of the Middle South Georgia District, provides professional conservationists to help implement the district's long-range conservation program. The Middle South Georgia District channels the services of the NRCS to cooperators -individuals, groups, and unit of government - and sets priorities for the kind and amount of work.
Contact your local representative, the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, or the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission for more information about the work and services of the Middle South Georgia District.
