This south Ge:irgia house museum is a one-of-a kind buil::ling. Built between 1884-85 as a winlBr ,cottage for C. W. Lapham, a survi1,0r of the g.,at Ch i:ag:, fi0>, the house was well equippe:I w~h ~ own gas ligh1ing sys!Qm, ho1 and cold
running water, ind:or plumbing and mo:lem cbsets. Having suffere:l lung damage as a result of being trappe:I in a burning buil::ling, Lapham came to 1he bus11ing R>Sort 1own of Thomasville for~ sup~ therapeutic mitJ-winter climate and pin~soente:J air.
It is presume:! the strange cottage was desgne:l to ma!.a itas healthy and safe as possible for the Lapham family. The0> are no rQht angles in lhe cottage, and nothing is centered or symmetrical. The 19 rooms have 45 cbors and 53 wincbws. A remarkable double-flue chimney w~h a walk-th10ugh stainvay and cantilevere:J balcony exemplify 1he skill of~ coaato~ and the ooncem for safety in case of fire. Due to its outstanding archite:tural sQnifr.a.noe, the Lapham-Patterson Housie was namEd a NatOnal Historic Landmark in 1975. The Laphams sokJ their winter house in 1894, and~ was resotJ to James Patterson in 19::>5. The Pattersons remained in i:o,ssessOn until 1970.
