River of Words (ROW)
is an internationaJ poetry and art proj ect design ed to nurture respect and und erstanding of the natural world. Ch ildren lea rn their "ecologica l address" by hon in g their observati on '----------'---' skill s (the basi s of both art and science) and desc ri bing throu g h poetry and art their "place in space."

River of Words is a K-1 2 watershed study sparked by the forme r U.S. Poet Laureate, Robert Hass. All students who enter their poetry and art in the In ternationaJ River of Words competition will receive a certificate of recognition. Winners wi ll be annou nced in April 2003. National G rand Prize Winn ers (8 students annua lly) receive a trip to Washington DC where t hey are recognized at the Library of Congress.

FIELD TRIPS TO NATURE CENTERS Across the State, nature centers offer program s that support River of Words. On a fi eld trip, your students mig ht discover their local watershed and create poems or art they can submit to the contest. Th e content and cos t of these programs varies by center, but the Teacher's Guide includ es a detailed li st of natu re centers and the programs t hey provide.
RIVER OF WORDS EXHIBITION VISITS GEORGIA SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES Students' poetry and art will be on display in the Georgia River of Words Exliibitio11 for one year. The Exhibition travels to schools, conferences, festivals, pa rks and publi c buildings. Inspire your facu lty and students to participate by displaying the 2002 Ex hibition at your school-contact Petey Giroux with the Georgia Project WET program.
