Equal Opportunity Employer/Program Auxiliary Aids and Services Available upon Request to Individuals with Disabilities
Introduction
The loss of a job ranks as one of the most challenging experiences that a worker ever faces. To help lessen the impact in Georgia, this publication analyzing job losses has been prepared, with emphasis on skills and abilities that readily transfer from one career to another. The booklet lists the job preparation level as well as the knowledge bases, skill sets, and generalized work activities transferable to new jobs from the ten jobs most adversely affected by recent job cuts in this region. Nine of the ten jobs evaluated had at least 100 applications for unemployment insurance filed with the Georgia Department of Labor in January and February of 2008. It is hoped that using this publication will greatly shorten the time spent in transition from dislocated worker to finding alternative employment.
As an aid to finding new employment, for each affected job, a table lists the ten occupations with the most expected job openings (at the same job preparation level) that use many of the same skills and abilities as the lost job. Expected job openings in these potential new jobs are split into those resulting from newly-created positions and those coming from job replacements. This is important because although job losses in this region have been severe, there will still be new job opportunities, due mainly to replacing workers who leave voluntarily. Wages from the 2007 edition of the Georgia Wage Survey are also shown for each potential new occupation.
There are 50 new job possibilities highlighted in this report, each of which uses many of the same skills and abilities as a job lost by laid-off workers. For each of the 50 jobs, the last section of this booklet lists the top three (or four) industries in this region that employ the most workers in the particular occupation.
Occupational codes (e.g. 47-2031 Carpenter) utilize the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) system, upon which O*NET codes are based. Industry codes (e.g. 4841 General Freight Trucking) at the four digit industry group level are assigned using the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).
