abor market information relates to the operation of labor markets and the conditions affecting labor supply and demand. It encompasses a wide range of factors including population, employment by industry and occupation, unemployment, wage and salary levels, and changes taking place in any of these elements. Information of this type is used by planners, economists, academic researchers, economic developers, employers, career and education counselors, job seekers, and others needing current or historic information about labor market conditions. The primary purpose of labor market information is to facilitate the match between workers and jobs. It will assume more importance as technological changes in the work place require workers to obtain more education and skills. These ongoing changes will result in a growing mismatch of available jobs and workers with the requisite abilities. The effect will be an increasing incidence of spot labor shortages-not a shortage of people who want and need to work, but a shortage of people who can do the jobs businesses need done. Labor Information Systems of the Georgia Department of Labor is one of the state's primary producers of labor market information, although by no means the only one. Most of the data are produced in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics.
