GEO. W. HARRISON. STATE PRINTER, ATLANTA.
REPORT OF TRUSTEES.
To His Excellency Allen D. Candler, Governor of Georgia:
ir:-The law I' quir the Pre ident of the Board of 'I l"U tee of the Georo'ia chool for the Deaf to ubrnit an annual report to your Excellency. ill conformity ther to I beg to ubmit the following:
Th report of W. O. ConTIor, Principal of the School, deal with much needed improvem nt. I earneat.ly reque t your consideration of thi matter. If the pupils are to be properly cared for and hou ed, more room is absolutely needed.
The report of Dr. J. . Wat ,resident Phy ician df the chool, deal with the anitar condition of th il15titution and its need from that point of view. It i well worth he ding, and I trll t that at least be tel' ho pital facilities will be provided. Hon. D. ~T. Simmon, ecretary and Treasurel' of the Board, ubmits hi" yearly financial exhibit. From it you will see that the amount appropriated by the General Asembly for the upport of the school, i. "e., $25,000.00. failed to meet the cmrellt .expenses of the school. I regret the nee' ity of report, ing a deficit of nearly, or quite $3,000.00. Thi 'wa~ met by a 'urpllls from a previou appropriation. :N 0 legi lative .actJoJl will therefore be required to meet thi" deficit., but an increa ed appropriation will be n eded for the fiscal y ar beginning October 1, 1901. The Executiv Committee'" report deals with th workings of the in titution, and CIOmmends the CO'Ilduct of .all fficer;;. The attendan e is not quit a la.rge a la t y ar but upon the abatern nt of the now exi ting (partial) arIet
4 fever epidemi , will no doubt b much increa~ d 0, r la t
JOn. Pel onally I cheerfully beD" to comme'lld the work of th principal and teacher f th hool, and to thank your Excellency for official COtli1: i ' in the di~cbar()"e f my official duty.
V ry l' pectiully FELIX ORP T

The ordinary eJl.rpen es of the hool amounted. to $27,15.76.
The Legi latill'e saw fit to redu e th appropriation for upport, from $27,500.00 to $25 000.00, bu it wa rridently done under a misapprehen ion, for compared with other schools for the deal cattered through the United t3Jtes, Georgia doe not sufI ;r in t'he mere matter of per capita co t.
In the ten chool upported by the tate of .J:Tew York, . the c t run from $277.00 to $361.00, with an averao-e of $30 .00 P l' capita, nearly double that of Georgia.
rr'he urp1u on hand at th cl - of the 1a t fiscal year has .enab1 d you to go throug'h the year without creating .'i deficit but for th yea.r beginning with October it will be impo~ ib1e to go through without it unle "ome drasti mea ure ar taken to curtail the expenditure- to meet th appropriation and how thi can be done now, alter all arrangements for the year have been perfected, I can't see.
Th r .ar always a number of repairs that ought to be made, and that properly come under th head of ordinary expen -, and thi ha he;r tofore been dO'De from the appropriation for upport, uch as keeping up the fencepainting roof wher needed, and 0 on, which have had to be left undone. The chool hou1d have every year at 1eailt .'i thousand dollar for this purpos . .
Your Principal, with Mr. J. O. Harri~, attended the
onvention of American In truclors of th Deaf in Buffalo, at which wer read .many intere ting papers and th u-ual di'cu -ion h M, bearing upon deaf-mute education. It wa the larg t gathering that ha a -embled in lnany yeal. '.Vhile at the onvention, :Mr. W. :N. Marshall waemployed at a alary of $600.00 to take the place made vacant by the death of fro Frank Bright.
