HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES - Changes in the number of public high school graduates in Georgia's public high schools reflect (1) changes in the number of young people reaching the age at which pupils generally graduate from high school, and (2) the retention rate of the public high schools.
Male graduates as a percent of the total graduates increased from 44 percent in 1949 to 46 percent in 1959 and 49 percent in 1971.

INCREASED HOLDING POWER - The increased holding power of Georgia public schools is evidenced by the fact that the number of high school graduates increased 57.7 percent from 1961 to 1971, while the number of registered live births increased only 24.4 percent between 1943 and 1953, the years in which these graduates were born. The children born in 1943 entered school in 1949 and, after completing a twelve-year program, graduated in 1961. The children born in 1953 entered school in 1959 and, after completing a twelve-year program, graduated in 1971.
