INTRODUC T ION

The thinking behind the survey: No two school systems seem to

have exactly the same type of audio-visual program. The size, location,

physical facilities, financial conditions, and administration policy are

some of the factors which result in different types of programs. There-

fore, it is not practical to use a single factor, such as the cost per

pupil of the audio-visual program, for comparing one program with another. On the other hand, every school system will have an audio-visual program

1

the various components of which can be compared with similar components

of other programs.

For example, two school systems may be spending equal amounts per pupil for audio-visual education. One school system may be putting its money into recordings while the other could be purchasing only filmstrips. Therefore, a survey based only on per pupil expenditures would not present a realistic basis for comparing their A-V programs. In contrast, a survey comparing the expenditures for these components would be realistic and provide meaningful information. It is for that reason this survey is built mainly around the various components of audio-visual education rather than simply on the whole program. It must be pointed out that the "whole" program has not been neglected. A review of the charts on the various aspects of audio-visual programs together with a review of the information presented on whole programs should give a well rounded and comprehensive understanding of the relationships of those programs
reported herein.

Purpose of the survey: It is the purpose of this survey to compile, organize and report the facts as they were reported to the committee. No attempt has been made to evaluate the facts or data reported. It is believed that those studying the report can make their own evaluations. It is anticipated the survey will result in some critical thinking about audio-visual education in Georgia and in definite planned improvements in
the various programs.

How to use this survey: It is suggested that the position of your school system be checked in each chart with a red pencil. This will help you to see the relationships of your audio-visual education program with the programs of other school systems. If your system was not included jn. this survey it is suggested that the survey data for your system be collected on the form incorporated in this report at its end. Then compute the information required for each table according to the formula ', given for each table. Next write in the results in its relative position and you will have a visual indication of the relationships of your pro-
gram with the other programs reported.

The survey committee is grateful to those k-6 school systems which replied to the questionnaire. It is believed that this large number of replies has resulted in an accurate cross section study of audio-visual
education in Georgia.

(1952-53 School Year)
Georgia is rapidly coming to the fore front in audio-visual education. We have in the State Department of Education the largest and probably the best educational film service in the nation. We rank near the top in membership in the Department of Audio-Visual Instruction of the NEA. To maintain this leadership we need information vhich will help local administrators to evaluate their audio-visual programs and to determine where improvement is needed. It is the purpose of this survey to gather such information. The facts collected will be tabulated, consolidated, organized and passed back to you in a usable form. Your cooperation is solicited. Please return completed survey questionnaire by June 15, 1954 or as soon thereafter as possible. Please mail questionnaire to:
