Overview

In March 2008, Governor Sonny Perdue signed an executive order creating the Georgia Rx Exchange. The Rx Exchange project will deploy technologies to facilitate the exchange of prescription (or pharmaceutical) information in a secure and private environment across publicly funded health care programs administered by state agencies.

Participating Agencies
Georgia Department of Community Health Department of Corrections Department of Human Resources Department of Juvenile Justice

The participating agencies include the Georgia Department of Community Health (DCH), Department of Corrections, Department of Human Resources and Department of Juvenile Justice. The agency Commissioners will be responsible for advising the Governor on the program's status and activities, while DCH's Office of Health Information Technology and Transparency will coordinate the Georgia Rx Exchange project efforts.

Enhancing Health Care

The Georgia Rx Exchange will offer new and innovative ways to improve the effectiveness and coordination of medical care through:
Easier access to the medication therapy of patients moving from one state program to another; Sharing of critical health information between patients and providers; Increased access to clinical decision support tools; and A streamlined prior authorization process for patients stabilized on a prescription medication.

Georgia Rx Exchange's Expected Results:

Improve patient safety through the avoidance of adverse drug effects and medication errors Speed efficiency through the reduction of treatment delays Support prospective health care finance planning Enhance the prevention and monitoring of prescription drug abuse Provide the availability of medication data to all participating agencies through a secure Web-enabled system with multiple layers of security Integrate each agency's business processes and systems Serve as a springboard for facilitating electronic prescribing
