The Department of Agriculture was created by an act of the State Legislature on February 28. 1874. and thus Georgia became the first state in the nation t o formally
establish a Department of Agriculture. For over 70
years. the Commissioner was an appointed officer. but since 1945 he has been elected by the people for a
four-year term.
