From the State Librarian
June 1, 2003
Dear Public Library Supporters:
The demand for public library services continues to climb as access to information and expert help finding the right information become more important to our daily lives at work and at play. Georgia's public libraries are working hard to meet the rising demands in their communities through a variety of library services, technology and community programming.
Georgia's public libraries are ahead of the curve in many respects. Programs such as Georgia Library PINES and GALILEO are helping Georgia's libraries share resources and provide enhanced services for Georgia library users.
Georgia's libraries give citizens access to a world of information on the Web or in print, as well as videos, DVDs, music, educational software and more. Public libraries offer free public access to computers and the Internet. Libraries host arts and cultural exhibits and preserve local history. In partnership with community organizations, schools and businesses, libraries meet community needs such as: literacy tutoring; computer skills training; career centers; parenting resources; and free, fun learning activities for families, youth and seniors.
I encourage all Georgia residents to take advantage of the wonderful array of resources available at their local libraries and to thank their librarians for making information available to all who walk through the libraries' doors.
Sincerely,
Dr. Lamar Veatch State Librarian

Introduction - 1

Georgia Public Library Service

Mission
The Georgia Public Library Service improves the quality of life for all Georgians by providing information and by encouraging reading, literacy and education through the continuing support and improvement of Georgia's public libraries.
Services & Programs
Georgia Library Public Information Network for Electronic Services (PINES)
Georgia Library PINES is the public library automation and lending network that gives any Georgian with a PINES card access to 7.4 million books and materials located in 236 public libraries in 119 counties. Every library cannot own every item, but PINES creates a statewide "borderless library" that provides equal access to information for all Georgians. PINES cardholders can have books and materials from any PINES library delivered to their local library. They can search an online catalog and submit a request from any computer with the Internet, or they can ask their local librarian for assistance.
Resource Sharing and GALILEO
The Georgia Public Library Service ensures that all Georgia public libraries and their library users have access to GALILEO. GALILEO, an acronym for Georgia Library Learning Online, is the state's virtual library, providing online access to thousands of periodicals, scholarly journals, books, encyclopedias, business directories and government publications. Citizens can access GALILEO at any public library facility. Library users can also access many of GALILEO's resources at home through remote password access.
Georgia Library for Accessible Services
Georgia Library for Accessible Services, or GLASS, is the library for blind, visually impaired and physically disabled Georgians. GLASS loans specially recorded books on tape, specialized tape playback machines and Braille materials. GLASS serves residents in 16 metro Atlanta counties. Thirteen subregional Talking Book Centers provide services for the rest of the state. Library users who are not able to visit one of the 14 libraries in person may obtain talking books and other materials through the mail free of charge.

Consulting, Training & Technical Assistance
The Georgia Public Library Service supports Georgia's libraries by providing a broad range of consulting services and technical assistance. The Georgia Public Library Service also offers a diverse menu of training and continuing education courses for Georgia's library professionals, from grantwriting to integrating technology into library services, to techniques for attracting more teen readers.
Grant Administration
The Georgia Public Library Service administers state and federal grant funds totaling approximately $35 million to Georgia's public library systems and GLASS. Grants support salaries and travel for Georgia's professional librarians, the purchase of books and materials, the maintenance and operation of services and the purchase and development of technology systems for staff and library users.
Child and Family Literacy
The Georgia Public Library Service coordinates the annual statewide Vacation Reading Program that encourages children and families to read for fun during school vacations by hosting literature-based activities such as puppet shows, arts programs, sing-alongs and wildlife visits. Children also receive rewards for achieving reading goals. Annually, children and families participate in Vacation Reading, checking out more than 3 million books and attending more than 6,000 programs.
Computer Networking & Facilities Support
The Georgia Public Library Service administers a statewide network of high-speed Internet connections to public library facilities in the state, ensuring that citizens living in any community in Georgia have access to the World Wide Web. The Georgia Public Library Service also assists public libraries with long-term facilities planning and helps secure state funding for construction projects.

PINES

What is PINES?
Georgia Library Public Information Network for Electronic Services, or PINES, is Georgia's public library automation and lending network for 236 libraries in 119 counties. Fifty percent of Georgia's population and 42 of Georgia's 58 public library systems rely on the PINES network for their library service. PINES creates a statewide "borderless library" that eliminates geographic and socio-economic barriers and provides equal access to information for all Georgians. Georgians with a PINES library card have access to materials beyond what is available on their local shelves and enjoy the benefits of a shared collection of 7.4 million books and materials that can be delivered to their home library with no charge to the library user.
Any resident of Georgia may obtain a free PINES card by visiting any PINES library. In addition to browsing and checking out books on the shelves of their local libraries, PINES allows library users to log on to www.pines.lib.ga.us, browse or search the online catalog for books and materials, and have their selections delivered to their local library free of charge. Anyone with a PINES card can access the PINES catalog by using computers at their local library or by using a PIN number to log on from home.
Visit a PINES participating library to sign-up for your
PINES library card and gain free access to 7.4 million books and materials.

Vacation Reading 2002
world.wide.reading@your library
The goal of the vacation reading program is to encourage children to read for pleasure at times when they are not in school. Libraries and librarians offer special programs and incentives to encourage children of all ages, from infants to teens, to read what they enjoy, and to read often. Parents, grandparents and other caregivers are also invited to participate and to help pre-literate children enjoy books and develop a love of reading.
The Vacation Reading Program is one of the important components in the broader scope of library service to children and their families. By engaging the imagination through personal interaction, literature-based programs, displays, age-appropriate print and audiovisual collections and promotional materials, we foster a love of reading in children. Encouraging the use and exploration of the public library equips children to succeed throughout their school years and prepares them to become life-long learners and lifetime public library users and supporters.
The vacation reading program is made possible in part by a Library Services and Technology Act grant from the national Institute for Museum and Library Services.

Vacation Reading 2002 By the Numbers
203,778 children and their families read for pleasure during their school vacation time
Children and their families checked out 3,883,080 books to read
Georgia's Public Libraries conducted 6,503 programs and 370,462 children attended.
339 television/cable stations and schools aired the public service announcement

Since 1938, Hart County Library has been a growing part of the Hart County community. Housed in its current facility since 1975, the library was greatly expanded, in space and services, in 1987. The building grew again in 2002, when the Hart County Adult Learning Center was added to the structure. Along with these expansions, library staff and administration continually work to improve Hart County Library, making it an inviting, hospitable place for all citizens to explore, experience, and enjoy its wide variety of resources.

About us
The Moultrie-Colquitt County Library System began in 1906 with a building grant from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. From 19501988, Colquitt and Thomas counties provided regional library service. Presently the system provides service for Colquitt County through the headquarters (located in Moultrie), the bookmobile, and service outlets in Doerun and Berlin. The Ellen Payne Odom Genealogical Library was made possible by a bequest from Mrs. Odom's estate. This special collection contains materials on Georgia, the eastern seaboard states, local history, Scottish ancestry and military veterans.

About us
The Troup-Harris-Coweta Regional Library serves a three-county region. Library services are tailored to the needs of 1) Coweta County, one of the fastest growing counties in the state, 2) Troup County, which houses light industry and, increasingly, commuters who work in the Atlanta area, and 3) rural Harris County, home of beautiful Callaway Gardens. Library service in Troup County began in 1921 when the LaGrange Women's Club opened a small library of 300 volumes. Harris County joined the system in 1950 and Coweta County in 1961. Newnan is home of the first Carnegie Library in Georgia, built in 1902, and today used as judicial offices.
