~~of How to Use Video in the Classroom
~ u{ J"One of PeachStar's goals is to provide Georgia
educators with high quality resources that are
both relevant to the work you do AND
efficient for use in the classroom. That's why
PeachStar staff use the feedback we get from
teachers and media specialists to guide the
way we develop resources for use in Georgia
classrooms. PeachStar's development of this
tutorial about using video in the classroom is
in direct response to requests from teachers to
help you most effectively integrate video
resources into classroom instruction.
Why Video?
Video can enhance classroom instruction by visually demonstrating an abstract science concept, bringing relevance to a lesson on conservation by giving students an opportunity to see the animals and communities that are affected, or bringing history and literature to life through dramatic reenactments. Video does not have to dominate your lesson plan; wellchosen segments can be worked into your lessons to supplement and enrich the resources you already have.
The use of video to enhance classroom teaching and learning ties in very closely with Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. By addressing the multiple intelligences of the student population through the use of diverse teaching methods, you can more effectively communicate the information you are teaching. Supplementing discussion with relevant video resources uses students' visual-spatial as well as their verbal-linguistic intelligences, thereby increasing the rate of retention.
The use of video in the classroom also speaks to the notion of Learning Modalities, which dovetails nicely with that of Multiple Intelligences. Learners are traditionally categorized by three modalities: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic (Tactile). The use of video to supplement classroom teaching assists learners who best comprehend material presented through the visual and auditory media.
Which Video?
It's important that you find the right pieces of video to use in conjunction with the lessons that you teach, and traditionally the responsibility for researching and selecting video resources has been left to the classroom teacher. PeachStar, however, understands that as teachers you have time constraints that make it difficult for you to conduct extensive searches for relevant video materials to integrate into your teaching. In order to make this task easier for you, we have designed online course listings complete with program recommendations as a timesaving ready resource.
PeachStar staff, in conjunction with teachers, media specialists, and curriculum directors, have identified programming that meets the core standards for courses that are taught in Georgia schools. Rather than trying to identify whole series that meet course objectives, PeachStar has concentrated on the narrower level of episodes, choosing episodes across a number of series that may be used together to support the courses you teach. PeachStar's new programming listings by course may be found online at www.gpb.orglpeachstar under Teacher Toolbox.
This new PeachStar resource assists you with the job of choosing Which Video. For most of the videos in the PeachStar repository, the work of reviewing and correlating the videos has already been done for you.

How Do I Integrate the Video Into My Lesson Plan?
There are a few important steps you should follow to effectively integrate video into your teaching:
Plan your lesson first and then choose a
video that supports your objective.
View the video BEFORE sharing it with the
class to ensure it meets your needs and to determine where in the lesson plan the video should be inserted. If you are using traditional video, cue the tape to the exact point you intend to show. If you are using Internet streamed video, you can either stream the segment live or save it to your computer. For detailed instructions on how to use PeachStar's video streaming resource, visit the PeachStar website at www.gpb.orglpeachstar and look under Video Streaming. Whether you are using traditional or Internet-streamed video, make sure you have the segment readily available before introducing it into the day's lesson.
Discuss the video with your class before viewing
it and go over any advanced concepts and vocabulary the video will cover. Many of PeachStar's programs, especially those online, have existing resources from which you may draw; when such resources are available, offer students a listening/viewing guide to complete as they view the video to direct them to key concepts.
Stop the tape or pause the video stream and
explain key points to make sure that the class understands the information they are seeing in the video AND how it relates to what you are doing in the lesson. Ask and answer questions about the video once it has ended to reinforce
what the students have just seen and relate it to the lesson as a whole.
In addition to this handout, you may find an interactive online tutorial for How to Use Video in the Classroom at www.gpb.org/peachstar under Teacher Toolbox. The tutorial will assist you as you use PeachStar's online course listings to select videos for use in your own lesson plans. Take advantage, not only of the wonderful video resources PeachStar has to offer, but also of the wealth of information we can share about putting those resources to good use in the classroom setting.

Video Streaming?
s this new school year begins, we want to remind you of a great teaching tool you have at your fingertips - Georgia Public Broadcasting's video streaming service. Over 22,000 video clips, ranging from five seconds to several minutes and spanning all grade levels and subjects, are free for you to use with your students. For those of you who have discovered the ease and versatility of our video streaming site, we want to remind you about our usemame and password protocols.
Each school in Georgia has a unique username and password for use by faculty and staff. For copyright purposes, we ask that you not freely distribute the usemame and password to your students, such as by printing it on a class syllabus or assignment. Your usernanle should consist of your school system name (county or city), as well as your school's four-digit DOE registly number. Your password should be your school system's three-digit DOE system number. [f you are not sure that you are using your school's assigned username and password, please call us at 1 (888) 501-8960 to confirm it. The primaly reason we urge
2 I www.gpb.org!peachslar
all schools to use their assigned login infol111ation is that it allows us to keep accurate records of who is using the video streaming service, and how much. This infol111s us in our training initiatives, allows us to troubleshoot problems at the system or even building level, and proVides us with accurate data to justify continued support for offering video streaming to Georgia teachers.
For those of you who have not yet had a chance to explore our video streaming service to see how easy
it is to integrate into your classroom teaching, please contact us at 1 (888) 501-8960 to schedule a training. GPB Education staff will be happy to visit your school or school system to conduct an orientation and to prOVide you with ideas on how to integrate this powerful tool into your teaching. [n addition, look for sessions and workshops at state conferences, including COMO in Octobel; GaETC in November, and discipline-specific conferences throughout the school year

When many people think about public education they are often focused on individual students or school performance and achievement. But there is another critical area often overlooked. The economic prosperity of Georgia is inextricably linked to the state's education system.
The Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce teamed up earlier this year to offer 12 regional presentations highlighting the "Economics of Education." These seminars were presented to local business leaders, educators, government decision makers and interested citizens.
Dr. Stephen Dolingel; the Georgia Partnership's president and key presenter at the sessions, explained that when audiences see the facts they are both slllvrised and alarmed at how economics and education go hand-in-hand. "Academic achievement, or non-achievement as the case may be, does
impact the state's economy and ability to attract business," he said.
As an example, the presentation looks at Georgia's high school graduation rate of approximately 60 percent. Dolinger points out that it is hard for any state to reach its greatest potential if nearly half its children are not completing high school.
Using U.S. Census Bureau figures, the "Economics of Education" presentations explain that in 2001, nongraduates earned $9,000 per year less than high school grads and $30,500 less than college grads. The annual income for non-high school graduates is $19.434. Compare that to high school grads at $28,343 and fouJ'year college graduates at $49,985.
How does this impact our communities and state? Here are some facts:
Higher per capita income would lead to a higher demand for goods and services produced or offered in the community;
Higher demand in the retail market leads to higher demand in the wholesale market.
The effect is an increase in the region's economy which fuels prosperity.
As George Israel, president of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce said, "The business community understands that a strong education system is simply tlle best way to ensure continued economic growth and vitality for the state."
Be sure to watch the special airing of 'lYle Economics 0/ Edllcatioll. a taping of one of the 12 presentations made across the state to learn more about the impact education has on the state economy. It will air on Channel 430 during the month of August. Student Creativity Celebrated at State Media Festival
This May, Georgia Public Broadcasting hosted the 2004 State Media Festival. Almost 100 judges from across the state joined us to evaluate nearly 650 media projects. Judges spent the morning and early afternoon of Friday, May 7th reviewing projects and providing feedback to the authors. Projects included websites, PowerPoint presentations, live-action videos, animations, and photographic essays. These projects were produced by students from kindergarten through 12th grade from all across the state. Some projects were produced specifically for the media festival; others were done as class projects or even independent study. Nearly 150 projects were deemed superior and advanced to the International Student Media Festival, which will take place in October at the 2004 AECT national convention in Chicago.
The International Student Media Festival, now 30 years in existence, is hosted by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology; the Georgia State Media Festival is a sanctioned state festival and has been taking place for 27 years. Entries for the media festival are first judged at the school level, if a school chooses to host such a festival. Those projects earning a score of 98 or above advance to the system level festival, encompassing winners from all the schools in that school system. System level winners are then sent to the State level, and State winners move on to International.
More infonnation on tl1e International Student Media Festival can be found at their website, http://www.ismf.net. For more information about participating in tl1e Georgia media festival, sponsored by GAIT, the Georgia Association for Instructional Technology, visit http://www.gait-inc.org.

Helping Children Succeed from Birth to School
Since April 2002, Georgia Public Broadcasting has been part of tlle Five Star Alliance for Children, a consortium made up of tlle state broadcasting networks from Georgia, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi and designed to share best practices in early childhood development with parents, caregivers, and teachers. The primary project currently being undertaken by tlle alliance is the Birth to School initiative, which comprises Rigbt Pr'Om Birtb and Going to Scbool, two special video series developed by Mississippi Public Broadcasting and based on the research of internationally recognized child development experts Drs. Craig and Sharon Ramey.
Right Pmm BMb features twelve thirtyminute episodes tllat help parents and caregivers to better understand the stages of development tllJ'ough which children pass from birtll until 18 months of age. The series is broken into three sections. The first four episodes address emotional and social development in infants and discuss issues such as brain development, people skills, learning and intelligence, and point of view. The fifth episode examines seven essential principles for positive child development, which include encouraging exploration, mentoring, celebrating, rehearsing and extending new skills,
protecting, guiding and limiting behavior, and communicating. The sLxth through eleventll episodes examine the successive developmental stages from birth to 18
months, such as establishing trust, discovering tlle world, and a becoming social being. Going 10 Scbool, which is designed for the parents and caregivers of children ages three to five, picks up where Rigbt Prom Birtb leaves off and assists with the preparation of children for successful entIy into school. The series begins with an examination of responsive care-giving and a review of the seven essentials for positive child development. Once the essentials have been cov-
ered, Going to Scbool shows parents and caregivers ways they can help children to learn and practice the essentials during their daily routines both at home and at preschool.
Information about how to choose a quality childcare program as well as learning opportunities such as English as a Second Language are also available. Finally, the series offers tips on how to establish successful communication with schools and teachers regarding a child's education.

Educational Programming That Meets State Needs
In January 2001, CPB Education adopted a new process for acquiring educational programming. AU proposed original productions as well as acquired programming must meet the same criteria. CPB Education will purchase and produce only those programs that specifically satisfy documented educational priorities.
To set its progranuning priorities, CPB Education conducted an exhaustive needs assessment by reviewing state curriculum mandates; educator and learner needs surveys; professional education, degree, and certification requirements; and other evaluative resources. K-12 programs, for example, must correlate with the state Quality Core Curriculum and must address target subject areas.
Programs that pass this initial review then must satisfy the following criteria.
Complete learning package Includes lesson plans and activity guides either in print or online format. Includes preferably video, Internet, and/ or CD-ROM components.
Appropriate content Identifies and satisfies instructional purpose and behavioral objectives. Utilizes appropriate instructional strategies and activities to achieve objectives. Effectively integrates concepts across the PreK-16 curriculum and can be utilized to
reinforce learning in multiple disciplines. Effectively relates concepts with application to the real world. Provides factual, current, and age appropriate content.
High quality production Utilizes audio that is clear and consistent in quality and volume. Utilizes video with sharp image, contrast, and color depth. Matches visual images and effects with audio effects and music. Utilizes appropriate and enhancing visual and audio effects. Contains captioning for learners with hearing impairment.
Delivery Utilizes effective strategies to engage learners and maintain interest. Involves natural and relaxed actors, speakers, and participants. Maintains an effective pace and flows lOgically. Offers easy-ta-navigate Web-based materials. Includes an explanation of hardware and software requirements as well as operating
procedures for computer-delivered components. Provides clear, appropriate, and beneficial presentation aids.

Georgia Public Broadcasting and Ready To Learn
Begun back in 1993 with Georgia Public Broadcasting as one of fOUf pilot sites, the Ready To Learn Service is public broadcasting' 5 response to our nation' 5 urgent goal of ensuring that children begin school ready to learn.
According to the 1991 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Survey, one out of every three children in America enters school unprepared for learning. The cause behind this statistic is poor language skills and! or inadequate attention span resultant from improper educational, social, and emotional development.
GPTV's nine-station network reaches every county in the state of Georgia in addition to a significant audience in neighboring states. This enables CPS to provide the Ready To Learn Service to children, parents, teachers, and caregivers statewide, including the metro Atlanta area.
CPTV offers a daily line-up of uninterrupted, commercial-free children's prograrruning from six in the morning to six in the evening.
The programming and specially produced messages between shows are aimed at helping children develop skills that will help them be successful in school.
CPB Education handles the community outreach responsibilities for Ready To Learn across the state.
CPB with the PBS Ready To Learn Service is taking a critical step in bridging the learning gap by giving parents, teachers, and caregivers the tools with which to interact with children and make television an active learning experience.
Each month CPB Education distributes 300 books each month to children and families who otherwise would not own books through the First Book Program.
GPB Education distributes PBS Families, a bi-annual magazine designed to extend the
learning of Ready To Learn programming through suggested activities, which encourage reading and program interaction (available in both Spanish and English).
CPS Education staff present workshops for parents as well as early childhood profeSSionals and caregivers, which teach how to extend the learning of the Ready To Learn programming.
CPS Education enters into partnerships with other organizations like public libraries, Head Start, childcare providers, and other community organizations to further the goal of preparing children for success in learning.

GPB Education collaborated with teachers in 2001 to assess potential programming offerings using a preset rubric or evaluative fannula in order to ensure that all acquired programming effectively meets the needs of Georgia classroom teachers. All programming acquired from this point forward has met the criteria set forth in the rubric.
Over the summer of 2002, CPB Education collaborated with Curriculum Directors to arrange CPB Education's broadcast schedule so that it follows the pacing charts used for teaching content in Georgia classrooms.
GPB Education acquires programming from a number of vendors nationwide, and negotiates multiple-year rights when possible to make the maintenance of school video libraries easier for Georgia media specialists.
The new GPB Education website features a comprehensive program guide complete with a searchable database of information including series and episode descriptions, provider information, program length, copyright information, and QCC correlations where available.
The Workshop In A Box website offers a comprehensive overview of GPB Education's history, programming, and services as well as helpful resources such as a PowerPoint tutorial on integrating video resources into PowerPoint presentations and sample lesson plans.
GPB Education's video streaming resource allows students and educators in K-12 classrooms to access video resources via the Internet without the use of a television or VCR. These resources, available in shorter segments correlated to specific QCC standards, may be streamed live or downloaded for later use.
The Video Correlation Project, begun in 2000, continues as Georgia teachers review and correlate videos from the GPB Education repository to the Georgia Quality Core Curriculum by individual segments.
GPB Education staff offer onsite trainings across the state to orient educators on the use of GPB Education in the classroom. Trainings cover satellite equipment, the use of GPB Education programming, video streaming, and more.

Credit-Bearing GPB Education Initiatives for High School Students
GPB Classroom
Working in conjunction with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, GPB Education is addressing the needs of Georgia classrooms through GPB Classroom. This initiative uses multiple media to deliver credit-bearing courses to Georgia students in subject areas where many systems lack staff with specialized certification.
Physics and Chemistry Courses Certified content experts in the areas of both physics and chemistry developed all
course content, tailoring lessons to the requirements set forth by the Georgia Quality Core Curriculum.
CPS Education's physics and chemistry telecourses offer students opportunities for learning in an environment that is content-driven, academically rigorous, and flexible. Telelearning courses combine stimulating and informative video programming with challenging textbooks and other course materials supported with Internet-based course-related materials.
For each course content unit (approximately one week of instruction), there will be links to specific learning objectives grounded in physics and chemistry similar to those presented in any number of widely used high school textbooks.
CD-ROMs ancillary to the course textbooks, computer drills, course-packs (including texts), and the interactive online activities will be used to support the primary delivery of content via the video medium.
Students will achieve laboratory objectives through the use of laboratory kits or online subscription laboratory sites such as Tlte Chemistnj Place.
Students who pass the courses will receive credit that satisfies state requirements for physics and chemistry courses.
GPB Education is piloting these telecourses in 5 school systems around Georgia beginning fall 2002. These courses will be available to all Georgia high school students in fall 2003.

Teleconferences
GPB Education's teleconferencing capabilities allow learners at remote sites to receive information to further develop their professional careers, and in some cases, obtain or renew their certifications.
The Institute for Continuing Legal Education uses GPB Education to allow members to satisfy their continuing education requirements from remote sites across the state.
The Office of School Readiness uses GPB Education to broadcast training to educators statewide.
The National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers, and Treasurers use GPB Education to broadcast continuing education sessions to members across the country.
Video Streaming
In September 2001, GPB Education launched video streaming from its website, allowing students and teachers across the state of Georgia to access educational video clips over the Internet without the use of a television or VCR.
GPB Education's video streaming website features more than 20,000 video clips from more than 1,000 different programs, including many from GPB Education's own video repository.
Teachers and students may search for video assets by grade, subject area, keyword, or Georgia Quality Core Curriculum Standard. Many of the segments were correlated by Georgia educators.
Segmented video resources give educators the flexibility to select only those clips that apply directly to the standards they intend to teach rather than using valuable class time showing an entire full-length video.
The streaming website is password protected, and each school gets its own username and password. This allows GPB Education to collect information about who is getting the most benefit out of the streaming service and to whom we might need to offer additional support.
GPB Education has developed an online tutorial to assist new users with the video streaming process. The tutorial may be found on the GPB Education website at www.gpb.org/peachstar.
Onsite trainings conducted by GPB Education staff are available to schools who would like an in-depth orientation to video streaming.

The Video Correlation Project
The purpose of this project originally funded by the Georgia State Legislature, is to create an easily accessible repository of multimedia curriculum materials that have been correlated to Georgia's Quality Core Curriculum.
Certified Georgia educators selected for their content expertise and classroom experience conduct the correlation of video and audio programming to specific educational standards.
Educators only evaluate programming in the grade level and content area in which they are certified.
Once the correlations have been made, they are posted online as an integral part of GPB Education's program guide, a searchable database that allows educators to search for programming by keyword or subject area and grade level. Information yielded by a search includes:
o Program description o Episode descriptions o Grade level o Time codes for video segments o Provider information o CopyrightUtionnation o QCC Standards addressed (if available)
Internal1inks to the Quality Core Curriculum Standards posted on the Georgia Learning Connection website ensure that the correlations posted in the GPB Education program guide are updated and correct.
The long-term goal for this project is to have every GPB Education video program available online so that once an educator has searched for a program using the searchable database,
they may download or stream it. This digital library will serve as the programming
repository for digital satellite broadcast as well as video streaming.
These video resources may be used in segments along with other educational media such as PowerPoint presentations to build lesson plans or as complete programs to support the teaching of specific concepts in the classroom.
This project will serve as a national model for using digital technology to store, retrieve, and play educational video programming online.

Getting to Know PeachStar
In 1994, PeachStar Education Services was created as a division of Georgia Public Broadcasting to provide high quality educational resources that enrich, inform, and support the Georgia learning community. Over the past years, PeachStar has worked toward this goal by providing an array of educational programs and services.
PeachStar Education Services provides programming, delivered via the PeachStar Satellite Network, to students, parents, teachers, and nontraditional learners throughout the state. PeachStar negotiates with nationally known instructional television and distance learning providers to acquire quality instructional programming and highly effective staff development programming. PeachStar also produces original programming to meet the needs of Georgia students. Recently, PeachStar has launched its video streaming website. This site offers a multitude of videos and video clips correlated to the Georgia QCCs. By correlating the videos to Georgia's standards, teachers will be provided with video programming that can be integrated into their lessons to assist students in meeting performance expectations. Peach Star's video streaming website is one more way that Peach Star is making an impact on education in the state of Georgia.
PeachStar Video Streaming Website Beginning in August 2001, video programming and support materials became available at http://www.gpb.org/peachstar/ the website maintained by GPB's Peachstar Education Services Division, as part of Peachstar's ongoing support of Georgia educators and students. As of October, Georgia educators may now find online more than 10,000 video clips from an excess of 1,000 different programs drawn from the video repositories of Peachstar and United Learning and other educational distributors. More programs are added each day. The Peachstar video streaming website is password protected and these resources are available exclusively to Georgia public school educators and students for instructional purposes. Each school's media specialist has been given a username and password to access the site.
