OF GEORGIA
The present Great Seal has been in use since 1799 with th e exception of the period 1863-1865 when a specially designed Great Seal w as used, and th e period 1868-1871, w hen it w as hidden by S ecretary of Stat e Nathan C . Barnett . In 1872, it was restored by M r. Barnett after Georgians were again in power in th e state . I n 1914, the da te on the S eal was change d by legislative action from 1799 to correspond with th e year of the state's birth and th e birthday of th e United States. Th e descripiton of th e S eal is as foll ows: Th e device on one side is a view of the seashore, with a ship bearing the flags of th e Unit ed States riding at anchor near a w harf, receiving on board hogsheads of toba cco and bales of cotton, emblematic of the exports of this Stat e; at a small distan ce a boat, landing from the interior of the Stat e, with hogsheads, etc., on board, representing t he Stat e's internal traffic; in the back part of the same side a man in th e act of plowing, and at a small distan ce a flo ck of sheep in diff erent postu res, shaded by a flou rishing tree; the motto thereon, " A griculture and Co mmerce, 1776." Th e device on th e other side is three pillars supporting an arc h, with the word " Constitution" engraven within th e same, em blematic of the C onstitution, supported by the th ree departm ents of go vernment, viz., th e legislati ve, judicial, and executive-th e first pillar having engraven on it "Wisdom ," the second " J ustice," the third M oderation"; on the right of the last pillar a man standing with a drawn sword, represe nting the aid of the m ilitary in the defense of the Constitution; the motto, " Stat e of Georgia, 1776." t!nnotated code of Georgia, 1933, chapter 40-7, code section 40-701.
