Requirements for Georgia Intrastate Commercial Motor Carriers
The Georgia Department of Public Safety (MCCD) has implemented an INTRASTATE USDOT numbering program effective October 1, 1998. All vehicles operated by motor carriers operating exclusively within the boundaries of Georgia must display their motor carrier identification number preceded by "USDOT" and followed by "GA." The markings on commercial motor vehicles must also include the legal name or a single trade name of the motor carrier. This lettering must be on each side of the power unit, readily legible from 50 feet during daylight hours and in a sharply contrasting color. (Rules 1-390.19 and 1-390.21).
Intrastate motor carriers that meet the following criteria are subject to this Rule:
1. Has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) in excess of 10,000 lbs); or 2. Operating a vehicle designed to transport more than 8 passengers (including the driver) for
compensation; or 3. Operating a vehicle designed to transport more than 15 passengers including driver and is not used for
compensation; or 4. Transporting placardable amounts of hazardous materials; and 5. Operating only within the State of Georgia.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety, Motor Carrier Compliance Division administers the Motor Carrier Safety Assistance Program (MCSAP). The State has adopted the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Hazardous Materials Regulations as published in Title 49 CFR. Intrastate and Interstate carriers are subject to these safety regulations.
