Mission
The fire services program provides fire protection to state property and the community surrounding the prisons.
Introduction to Fire Science, Fire Fighting Strategy and Tactics, Fire Prevention and Inspection, EMT/First Responder and Hazardous Materials.
History
The program was established by Chief Buddy Brooks in 1963 at the Georgia Industrial Institute, which is now Lee Arrendale State Prison. The program consisted of one fire station, eight inmate firefighters and one part-time staff person assigned to the station.
Today
The Georgia Department of Corrections operates: 18 Fire Stations in State facilities, four in County facilities Seven Boot Camps and probation detention centers have trained wildfire teams who assist the Georgia Forestry Commission on wildfires in the North Georgia Mountains. More than 220 offenders participate in the offender firefighter program. GDC fire stations respond to more than 3,000 calls annually. Responses have increased over 600% since 1993.
Career Opportunities
Georgia legislature amended the firefighter certification requirements in O.C.G.A. Title 25 to be hired and certified as career firefighters.
Training
Offenders receive certification through the Georgia Standards and Training to become firefighters. Certification includes:

Dodge State Prison, Station No. 3 Established in 1985 and renamed Melvin Alfonso Stephens

Johnson State Prison, Station No. 14 Established in March 1993 Responds to an average of 125 calls per year
Certifications: Firefighter 1, First Aid, Crash Victim Extrication, Hazardous Materials and Medical First Responder Has automatic aid agreements with Laurens, Washington, Emanuel counties and all of Johnson County including the cities of Wrightsville, Kite and Adrian
Calhoun State Prison, Station No. 15 Established August 1, 1994 Responds to an average of 125 calls per year
Certifications: Firefighter 1, Rescue Specialist, Crash Victim Extrication, First Aid and Hazardous Materials Serves Calhoun, Early, Randolph, Baker, Clay counties and the cities of Morgan, Edison, Arlington, Leary, Shellman, Blakely, Fort Gaines and Cuthberth
Macon State Prison, Station No. 16 Established June 1994 Responds to an average of 200 calls per year Certifications: Firefighter 1 and 2, First Aid, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, Fire Instructor, Firefighter Evaluator, Wildland Firefighter and Fire and Life Safety Educator Serves Macon County and has mutual aid agreements with Macon, Dooly, Sumter, Schley, Taylor, Talbot, Marion, Webster counties
Wilcox State Prison, Station No. 17 Established in October 1994 Responds to an average of 100 calls per year Certifications: Firefighter 1, First Aid, Pressurized Container, Hazardous Materials Awareness, Bomb Awareness, Rescue Specialist and Vehicle Extrication Serves Wilcox and Dodge counties and has automatic aid agreements with three departments and mutual aid with four departments in those areas
Autry State Prison, Station No. 18 Established in September 1993 Responds to an average of 300-350 calls per year Certifications: Firefighter 1 and 2, First Aid, Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, Structural Fire Control, Vehicle Extrication, Pressurized Container, Emergency Vehicle Driver Training, Highway Safety Training, Vehicle Rollover Prevention, Accountability Training Serves Mitchell, Baker and Thomas counties
Dooly State Prison, Station No. 19 Established in 1995 Responds to an average of 260 calls per year Certifications: Firefighter 1, First Aid, Hazardous Materials, Rescue Specialist, Crash Victim Extrication, Structural Fire Fighting, Pressurized Container, First Responder and Emergency Response to Railroad Incidents Has automatic aid agreements with Unadilla Fire/Rescue and mutual aid agreements with six other departments within Dooly County. Also, provids mutual aid for the southern portion of Houston County
