Life Adjustment
The mission of Roosevelt Warm Springs Vocational Rehabilitation Life Adjustment Department is "to assist persons with di abilities in obtaining independent living skills required for securing and maintaining employment."
Upon admi sion, all students are provided with a comprehensive weeklong orientation, as well as an assessment of their daily living skills. Afterwards, students enter classes where they receive instruction in Grooming & Hygiene, Laundry Care, Advocacy, Money Management, Communications and Drug Awareness. In the evenings, Food Preparation and Applied Budgeting are offered, and positive living experiences are made available through such activities as movies, field trips and use of computers. Students may also be referred to Study Hall or Organizational Skills Class.
Another component of this program is student leader hip. The Roosevelt Warm Springs Vocational Rehabilitation Unit has an active Student Council, which meets monthly with the VRU Leadership Team. Students may also be nominated for the STAR (Succes Through Awareness & Responsibility) Student Program. If selected, they agree to provide community service on campus, as well a role modeling with fellow students. In return, they receive certain privileges. Still other leader hip opportunities include Student Fire Marshal and Student Court Judge.
All students are given an opportunity for input through a formal Customer Sati faction Survey process. They are surveyed after their second week, third month and at discharge. Their responses are summarized and reviewed by their facility counselor and the Vocational Rehabilitation Unit Leader hip Teanl.
Behavioral Management
The Roosevelt Warm Springs Department of Behavioral Management is committed to con tantly providing quality mental health and behavioral intervention service to tudents in the RWS Vocational Rehabilitation Unit. Together with other staff, this department assists and upports students in meeting the goals of their individual work plans, as well as teaching them adaptive life kill and behavior .
ew tudents participate in group covering Interper onal Skills, Work Behaviors and Problem Solving. At any time during their stay, students can be referred to psychoeducational classes such as Stress Management, Social Skills, Anger Management, Smoking Cessation, Assertiveness Training, Music Therapy and Asperger's Disorder. Additionally, students can be referred to a Remedial Interpersonal Skills class to continue addressing their interpersonal skills development.
Individual counseling and psychological testing are provided based on student needs. A psychiatric clinic is provided for students taking psychotropic medications or needing a medication evaluation. Behavior Contracts can al 0 be implemented to assist students in changing maladaptive behaviors and students are interviewed during their first week on campus to obtain pertinent information to a si t in their adjustment to the facility. Guidance and upport are also available to students from aU departmental taff throughout the course of their program.
Counseling & Case Management
The Counseling and Case Management Department is one of many facet of the Roosevelt Warm Springs Vocational Rehabilitation nit. Its mis ion is "to improve the quality of life of individuals with disabilities by assisting them with independence and vocational goals."
Counseling and Case Management i committed to reducing the physical and economic dependency of student , maximizing their employment potential, promoting productive social participation and independence, and enhancing the personal dignity of individuals with disabilities.
Specific ervices provided by till department are divided into three areas: Counseling, Case Management/ Referral Reviews, and Admission. Under Coun eling, the department provides counseling and guidance to students, as well as marketing and maintenance/management of case files. In the area of Case Management, Student Individual Work Plans are developed, student staffings are coordinated with service providers, vocational rehabilitation counselors and student families. Admi ion takes place through tours of the facility, referral/review tracking and student registration.
This department manages the individual tudents' program during their entire stay at Roosevelt Warm Springs. It also seeks to promote the highest potential pos ibie in each person served.

Employment Development
The Roosevelt Warm Springs Employment Development Services Department provides a time-tested formula that began over 40 years ago assisting persons with disabilitie to work. To accompli h this goal, the RWS Vocational Rehabilitation Unit offers services in the following area :
Community Worksite Partnerships Students at Roosevelt Warm Springs are provided
opportunities to learn work skills in a setting in which the skills will be u ed. The community become their classroom and community employers, in partner hip with RWS, become their role models and teachers. Worksites are located on and off campus, extending to a 3D-mile radius, in an array of service skill occupations.
Students are referred to work experience sites and matched according to their abilities and intere ts. The sites selected are based on accessibility, technical content, social atmosphere, afety factors and the opportunities they present for interaction.
The "employer" and the RWS Vocational Rehabilitation Unit staff work together to determine the specific work task and behaviors with the aim of assisting the student in reaching his or her vocational goals. When it i determined that a tudent is competent in the skills required at one worksite, the student i then provided with another worksite in order to develop additional skills.
Production Workshop (Prowork) Prowork i an a essment and work development
program. It is an a sembly line, time-clock oriented program designed to offer student an introduction to the work kills and behaviors needed to obtain and maintain employment. There are approximately 16 behaviors with which students must demonstrate 80 percent competency to successfully complete this program.
Certificate Training Programs Cooperative arrangements with local technical
colleges allow tudents to attend training courses during their Roo evelt Warm Springs experience. This partnership has resulted in several special certificate programs for students, which include: Forklift and Heavy Machinery Training, Basic Printing Assistant, and Basic Lawn Maintenance. A partnership between the Step One Health Agency in Columbus and Roosevelt Warm Springs
has also resulted in a four-week program designed to provide vocational students with classroom training and clinical experience in order to receive a state license as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Example: The Printer's Assistant Program introduces the beginning student to an overview of the fundamentals of the printing industry. It emphasizes electronic imaging, reproduction photography, and introduction to digital reproduction, image assembly, offset duplication, bindery, measurement, industry overview and printer's math. Upon mastering these skills, students are deemed ready to seek entry level skills training in their field of study.
Retail Sales Operator Retail Sales Operator training is designed to teach the
skills necessary to operate a small business. These skills include: cash register operation, customer service, how to scan merchandise, price entering, making correct change, counting bills and coins, assisting customers, handling complaints, and the proper care and maintenance of business equipment.
A specialized service offered within the Retail Sales Program is the Business Enterprise Training Program (BEP). Roosevelt Warm Springs is the only facility in the state offering this specialized training. BEP is designed to provide evaluation and basic functional skills for on-thejob training for persons certified as legally blind. BEP participants must complete this portion of the training prior to bidding for employment at a contracted worksite.
Residential Operations & Development
The 160-bed Roosevelt Warm Springs Vocational Rehabilitation Dormitory provides comfortable accommodation and staff coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students gain the confidence to become independent in a residential dormitory environment. It features a laundry, student lounge, Library and campus store. Students also have access to all necessary medical and ancillary ervices. Meals are served in the full service Roo evelt Warm Springs Dining Hall (Valley Services) with careful attention given to special dietary needs.
Driver Education With a fleet of vehicle and equipment de igned to
assess driving potential, the Roosevelt Warm Springs Driver Education Program provides tate-of-the-art evaluation and instructional procedures for students seeking to improve their independent living goals by becoming licensed drivers. This process includes clinical and behind-the-wheel evaluations, adaptive equipment consultations, driving simulators, classroom learner's permit instruction, driver's and learner's permit transportation and support, a vehicle for actually obtaining a licen e, and an Independent Driver Education Lab.
Traumatic Brain Injury The Roosevelt Warm Springs Brain Injury Program is
designed to provide a variety of rehabilitation ervices to individuals with brain injuries in order to improve independent functioning in the home, community and work settings. It is an intensive, systematic day treatment program that includes cognitive therapy, adju tment groups, community re-entry, physical conditioning, interper onal/social skill groups, and tudy skill groups.
europsychologists provide individual counseling, family education, neuropsychological testing and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder testing.
Transitional Living The Roosevelt Warm Springs Transitional Living Skills
Program is designed to prepare individuals to live as independently as possible in their communities. Student goals are attained through individualized instruction and skill practice within an apartment-Like re idential environment. This re idential environment enables the student to develop the transferable skills needed to meet the demands of succe sful community living. The e skills include fmancial management, grocery shopping, meal preparation, health maintenance and leisure skill development.
Academic Services
The mission of Roosevelt Warm Spring Vocational Rehabilitation Academic Service i "inspiring students to experience success."
In order to accomplish thi mission, desired outcomes include: gaining confidence to become elf-directed; recognizing and u ing preferred learning styles and approaches; improving basic reading and math skills; learning communication kills necessary for work-related goals; learning participation skills; experiencing technology as a learning tool; recognizing and resolving problems; and, the overall celebration of learning.
Academic Services are provided from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Evening GED cla ses are al 0 available through West Georgia Technical College from 5 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursday.
A wide range of educational opportunities are available for client no longer in the public school system. These include:
Skills Remediation for High School Graduation Tests (for high school diploma )
Administering High School Graduation Tests (for high school diplomas)
G ED Preparation and G ED Testing, with necessary accommodations
Training on Assistive/Adaptive Learning Devices (provided by occupational/and/or physical therapists)
Ba ic Skills in Reading, Math and Language Workplace Literacy Skill ACT Preparation Tech School Entrance Preparation SAT Preparation
In addition to these standard academic services, the department offers a program known as OCO-Residential Program that enables Senior Special Education or Vocational Education students who qualify for DRS services and meet RWS criteria to complete their senior year at Roosevelt Warm Springs. While in the OCO-Residential Program, students will benefit not only from required academics, but also from work readiness training, interpersonal and social skills development, independent living and leisure activities, and problem solving/critical thinking development.
Therapeutic Recreation & Fitness
The Roo evelt Warm Springs therapeutic recreation complex includes the Frank C. Ruzycki Center for Therapeutic Recreation (RCTR), Camp Dream, a 400meter track and six tennis courts. The complex gives individuals with disabilities both the facilities and the opportunities to achieve recreational independence and athletic excellence.
amed for former RWS Executive Director Frank Ruzycki, the RCTR, a two- tory, 72,OOO-square-foot building, was dedicated on Aug. 5, 1996, just before the Atlanta Paralympics. It houses a 25-meter indoor pool, an CM regulation basketball court, a running track, weight room and fitness center, a six-lane bowling alley, two racquetball courts, arts and crafts center, snack bar, aerobics area and game room. Programs are now in place to fully utilize the entire complex and offer people with disabilities and their families the most innovative and comprehen ive outdoor and indoor recreation activities.
Another important Roo evelt Warm Springs recreation component is Camp Dream. The area was originally the site of a u.S. Marine encampment during Franklin Delano Roosevelt's many visits to Warm Springs as President of the United States in the 1930s and 40 .
The 74-acre camp, which was developed during the 1990 in partnership with the Georgia Jaycees, provides a place where all persons with di abilitie can experience recreation in a totally accessible setting, and where all camps serve persons with disabilitie . Located on a 12-acre lake, it includes two lakeside lodge, an outdoor pool, a giant outdoor pavilion, extensive paved nature trails and a dining hall that seats 100. Catered meals are available through the campus dining contractor and Camp Dream is also used a a training facility for Paralympic athletes from several countries, as well as RWS spon ored international wheelchair sports competitions.
Health Management
The Roosevelt Warm Springs Vocational Rehabilitation Health Management Department is dedicated to providing medical service to individuals with a variety of disabilities. The goal is to increase student involvement in the management of their own healthcare needs.
RWS Vocational Rehabilitation Health Management offers a variety of educational opportunities that include, but are not limited to, the foUowing subjects:
Medication Wellness Diagnosis Women's Health Sexual Health/Issues
Promoting students' independence in acce ing their healthcare needs is an important function of Health Management. The physician's office is open one day each week and a physician is on caB 24 hours a day for emergencies. Student are encouraged to make appointments in advance to address any health is ue .
urses are also available to students from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., and student may access the assistance of a health services technician 24 hours per day.
RWS students are encouraged to gain independence with their personal medications during their stay in the VRU through the assistance of Health Management. Student supply and manage their own over-the-counter drugs. They are educated on their medications in order to have them administered correctly. It is Health Management's goal to increase the number of students on self-medications through assessment and education.
