What is the Move On When Ready (MOWR) Act?, 2011 May

Move On When Ready Act (Ma W R), House Bill 149, was signed into law April 2009 as a dual enrollment opportunity for students to attend a postsecondary institution full-time during their junior an d/or senior year of high school.
Students that participate in MaWR will receive high school credit and college credit simultaneously while attending college classes on the college campus, fulltime. Approved college on-line courses can also be taken that meet high school graduation requirements.
How does Move On When Ready help students'! MaWR provides high school students the opportunity to 'Jump start" postsecondary education during the high school years . Once a student meets the admission requirements and is acce pted to a technical co llege , 2-year co llege or 4-year university, the high sc hoo l stude nt wi ll be free to " move on" earlier to the next educa tional level. The oppo rtun ities w ithin the Ma W R legi slat ion pro vid es st uden ts anot her ed ucatio nal alternative other than the traditiona l high school setti ng or school day structure. T he Move On Whe n Ready Act also prov ides students anot her opt ion to earning postsecondary cre dit before graduating hig h school. Students that earn pos tsecondary credit while in high school, according to recent research, are more likely to graduate from college or university.

What does Move On When Ready cost'? Students can save money on future college costs since most expenses are paid by a fund ing mechanism estab lishe d by the legislation . MOW R covers stu dents to enro ll full-time ( 12 semes ter hours) in postsecondary instituti ons to earn high school and college cre dits simultaneously.
How can students participate in Move On When Ready'? Interested students need to meet with the ir high sc hool counselor and parents to discuss the guidelin es and responsibilities of the MOWR program . Students are eligible to participate in Mo ve on When Ready if they are entering II th or 12th grade, as determined by the local system, and spent the prior school year in attendance at a public high schoo l in Georgia. Before a stude nt beco mes a MOW R ca ndidate, they must meet the adm ission req uire ments of the se lected co llege/ unive rsi ty. Once accepted , students will need to complete the application form, meet the dual enrollment! MOW R requirements as set by the eligible institution in addition to the Ga DO E guide lines , and se lect approved co urses to take at the college level that meet the high sc hoo l graduatio n req uirements.
What Else Do You Need To Know? Tuition , materials, fees and possi bly books are paid through MOW R funding. Foo d, transportation and othe r cos ts are the responsibilit y of the student. Stude nts participating in Move on When Ready are not eligib le for any other state student financia l aid at an eligible institution for courses taken under the program. They can receive additiona l institutional aid or local scho larships from the local postsecondary inst itution they are attending. Move on Whe n Read y course hours do not count aga inst any maxim um hou rly caps for HOP E sc ho larships or gran ts. Stude nts may live on cam pus or commute and the stu dent is responsible for expenses related to these living costs. Georgia public high school End of Course Tests and Georgia High School Graduation Test requirements must be met.
