PREPACE
This bulletin is prepared to assist professional school personnel in guiding high school students in the selection of a college for preparation for teaching. It is intended also to aid school personnel in the selection of an appropriate Georgia institution for continuing their education at an advanced level.
The professional certificate is issued to graduates completing approved programs in Georgia colleges and universities. The issuance of the certificate requires the recommendation of a designated college official indicating satisfactory completion of an approved program. The professional certificate may be earned in only the fields for which approval is indicated and at only the level or levels indicated.
Institutions and teacher programs are granted approval by the State Board of Education for a period of one year (temporary) or for a five-year period (full approval). Approval is granted for specific programs in a teaching field and for school service positions, with designated levels of preparation - undergraduate and graduate. A Departmental visitation and evaluation committee has recommended the five-year approved programs as meeting Departmental criteria; whereas, the institutions with one-year approved programs continue making annual reports to the Georgia Department of Education as they work toward meeting fully the Departmental criteria.
iv
Basic requirements for Departmental approval of colleges and programs include accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the following.
Institutional objectives should be sound and reasonable. Institutional development should involve the various publics and clientele. The teaching programs should be well planned and balanced, meeting state certification standards. The institution's staff and facil ities should provide sufficient strength for a continuing program. The institution's admission and guidance procedures should be educationally sound.
Any graduate of an unaccredited institution shall validate his credits through an accredited institution before receiving Georgia certification. Out-of-state programs approved by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) are acceptable to the Georgia Department of Education for certification.
Symbols for accreditation shown in this bulretin are as follows.
* Georgia Department of Education ** Southern Association of Colleges and Schools ***National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education
The registrar and head of the department of education are listed for each institution for students who may want to inquire of particular programs. Interested candidates for teacher education programs may also contact the Division of Program and Staff Development, Georgia Department of Education, Atlanta, Georgia 30334.
