Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites

G eorgia's state parks and historic sites offer activities and adventure for everyone in the family. Perhaps the most exciting ways for little adventurers to experience the great outdoors at the parks and historic sites are through two new recreational challenges: the Georgia State Parks Geo-Challenge and the Georgia History Trail. More than 40 of Georgia's state parks joined one of the largest treasure hunts on the planet with the launch of the Geo-Challenge, and the concept is simple: Adventure seekers use a GPS unit to find hidden treasures. Players download a PassPort from georgiastateparks. org, find hidden stamps in each cache to spell out the PassPort's message and collect custom geocoins. Caches are hidden in publicaccess areas, so treasure hunters won't venture off trails or into remote locations. Similarly, the newly launched Georgia History Trail, another geocaching game, will require players to answer questions about historic sites in order to get the combination to the cache. Inside historic site caches are trading cards. Geocaching is the perfect blend of technology, trails and trees, and these programs offer players the opportunities to exercise--while learning about Georgia history. Speaking of exercise, this summer Georgia's state parks and historic sites launch its Tons of Fun Weight-Loss Challenge to encourage families to exercise together, to improve their health through organized activities and to lose weight. The goal is for Georgians to lose 1 million pounds. Register online or at any state park beginning in June. Another exciting launch this year: The Chattahoochee Bend State Park in Coweta County makes its debut. At nearly 3,000 acres, it is one of Georgia's largest state parks, protecting seven miles of river frontage. Families can picnic near the river, hike a half-mile to an observation platform and play on a playground with rubber-tire base.

Five for Family Fun

Home to Georgia's capital city, the

Atlanta Metro region is bursting with history

and culture. Civil War battles were fought

in the area before General Sherman

burned the city to the ground in 1864.

Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With the

Wind, the best-selling book in the world

after the Bible, while living in Atlanta, and

Coca-Cola was also created here. The

birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr.,

Atlanta also served as home base for

many key leaders and organizations of

the civil rights movement. And in 1996, Atlanta welcomed the world when it hosted the Summer Olympics.
Atlanta Metro is an exciting place

Clockwise from bottom left: Center for Puppetry Arts, Atlanta; Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta; and Fernbank Museum of Natural History's NatureQuest, Atlanta.

filled with sparkling skyscrapers,

sports stadiums, big parks and great museums. It's home to

people--and animals--from around the world. Visitors will

discover a large zoo, animal parks and the world's biggest

aquarium. Outdoors, the area offers recreation and respite in

the form of rafting on the Chattahoochee, biking on miles of

non-motorized trails and hiking along one of the world's largest

pieces of exposed granite.

Thrill seekers will find plenty of activities to choose from

in Atlanta Metro, from theme parks with rides for all ages to

water parks for cooling off. Sports enthusiasts will find there's

almost always a game in town; the Braves, Falcons, Hawks and

Thrashers all play in Atlanta. The region's many theaters and performing arts

centers present concerts, plays, Broadway musicals and ballet. Atlanta is

also home to science centers where visitors can see dinosaurs and look

at the stars, art museums where they can create masterpieces of their

own, and a puppetry center where they can catch a show and see the

characters. There's even one museum just for kids.

1 Children--and the young at heart--won't want to miss the Fernbank Museum of Natural History's newest permanent exhibit, NatureQuest, which invites visitors into a working clubhouse built among the giant trees. Visitors can climb up a tree and cross elevated rope bridges for an aerial view of the immense expedition that awaits. Special interactive opportunities exist in every nook and cranny.
2 The Georgia Aquarium recently welcomed 12 new residents: bottlenose dolphins. The 1.3 million-gallon exhibit includes dolphin encounters, viewing windows and dolphin shows from the comfort of a brand-new, state-of-the-art theater.
3 Get up close and personal with puppets at the Center for Puppetry Arts. Families will be educated, enlightened and entertained through curriculumbased workshops, enchanting performances and the hands-on museum.
4 Designate one evening "Nature Night" and head out with the family for a night hike; visit with nocturnal animals up close, play games in the meadow and warm up by the campfire at the Chattahoochee Nature Center.
5 Fulfill every little girl's dream with a visit to the American Girl Boutique and Bistro. Shop for outfits and accessories, dine in the bistro and give your doll a new 'do!

CLOCK WISE FROM BOT TOM LEF T: GEORGIA DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES; GDEcD; GDEcD

Coast

In 1733, Georgia became

the final American colony, with

Savannah as its first city. General

James Oglethorpe founded the

city on the bluff overlooking the

Savannah River and designed it

with wide, open streets and

shady public squares. Most of

the original squares still exist

and are filled with great oak

trees and flowering plants.

The city is also known for

its many surviving historic

mansions. Museums, monuments
and lighthouses transport you to another time or place.

Clockwise from bottom left: Fort King George State Historic Site, Darien; Tybee Island Beach, Tybee Island ; and Tybee Island Light Station, Tybee Island.

Whatever interests you, from

planes, trains and ships to African American history and

art, there's a museum for you to explore. Many are

outdoors, including lighthouses and forts.

Nature lovers flock to the Coast, too. More than

a dozen islands protect the Georgia coast, and they

are home to a variety of animals and wildlife. Wild

horses run on the beaches of Cumberland Island, sea

turtles nest on island shores and more than 300 types

of birds call the islands home. The famous Okefenokee

Swamp is also located in the region, and visitors just

might catch a glimpse of alligators, black bears, bald

eagles and even carnivorous plants.

But if all you want to do is play on the beach, enjoy miles and miles of

it from Tybee Island near Savannah to the stretches of the Golden Isles.

Five for Family Fun
1 Play and splash along more than 90 miles of pristine beaches from Savannah's Tybee, Jekyll and St. Simons islands to the not-to-be-missed Cumberland. Go swimming, surfing or kayaking or hop on the Lady Jane for a shrimping expedition.
2 Locals and tourists alike enjoy taking part in Savannah Fun Tours' self-guided scavenger hunt competitions, which make learning about the city and its storied history great fun.
3 Lighthouses and forts offer fabulously fun insight into the Coast's history, and there are a handful of great ones in the area. Tybee Island Light Station and Museum has been guiding mariners' safe entrance into the Savannah River for more than 270 years. Neighboring Fort Pulaski National Monument, also on Tybee, marked the first significant use of rifled cannons in combat.
4 The largest and most complete antebellum railroad repair facility is still in existence at the Roundhouse Railroad Museum in Savannah. Hop on board for train rides or rail car tours and don't miss the children's activities in the Baggage Car.
5 Enjoy 18 holes of miniature golf; cool off at a pool complete with zero-entry access, lap lanes and a wading area; and play on a state-of-the-art playground with swings, slides and more at the Neptune Park Fun Zone on St. Simons Island.

Classic South

The Classic South region in east-central

Georgia is known for its beautiful antebellum

homes, historic towns, twisting rivers and

famous golf greens. Its history is rich with

stories from the Revolutionary War and the

Civil War. The homes of Confederate Vice

President Alexander Stephens and Confederate

Clockwise from top left: Mill Pond Kayak, Twin City; Boardwalk at McDuffie Public Fishing Area, Dearing; and International Disc Golf Center, Appling.

Secretary of State Robert Toombs are located here, and the area acted as General Sherman's headquarters during the March to the Sea. Visitors

can enjoy countless other historic sites

and museums displaying war relics, including the lost Confederate

treasure chest at the Mary Willis Library in Washington.

Augusta is the second-oldest and second-largest city in Georgia,

and like the rest of the Classic South region, it has a long, proud history.

The construction of the Augusta Canal in 1847 made Augusta the

second-largest cotton market in the world, and the city's Confederate

Powderworks was the only structure ever built by the Confederate States

of America. By the late 1800s, the Augusta area was a major resort

destination, drawing wealthy Northerners who built winter mansions. Today,

Augusta has nine neighborhoods on the National Register of Historic Places,

as well as many historic monuments and cemeteries.

Many people associate Augusta and the Classic South region with golf

because the city is home to the world-famous Masters Tournament,

which was started in 1934 by golf legend (and native Georgian) Bobby

Jones. But Augusta is also known as the water sports capital of the

Southeast and is the site of several annual international events, including the

Augusta Invitational Rowing Regatta, the Head of the South Rowing Regatta

and the Augusta Southern Nationals. The region's many waterways host races

and tournaments of all sorts, from rowing and sailing to fishing.

Five for Family Fun
1 Embark on a trail on a raised pier boardwalk system and become familiar with the varied habitats Reed Creek Interpretive Center in Martinez is fortunate to possess. Encounter wildlife that has either stopped over during migration or taken up permanent residence.
2 The McDuffie Public Fishing Area, or "State Ponds," in Dearing offers an array of outdoor recreational opportunities: seven ponds for quality bream, bass and catfish angling; two archery ranges; a 12-acre dove field; lakes for waterfowl hunting; nature trails; and kids' fishing events and adventures in the spring.
3 Spend a day, weekend or week hiking, boating, geocaching, playing miniature golf or camping at one of six state parks and historic sites in the Classic South: A.H. Stephens, Elijah Clark, Mistletoe, Magnolia Springs, George L. Smith and Hamburg state parks.
4 Hear the trills of kingfishers and the chorus of a thousand tree frogs or delight in the myriad of summer dragonflies at the Phinizy Swamp Nature Park just minutes from downtown Augusta. Located on 1,100 acres, Phinizy Swamp offers visitors the chance to see blue herons, red-shouldered hawks, otters, alligators and the elusive bobcats in their natural setting.
5 Check out one of three championship disc golf courses before immersing yourself in disc golf memorabilia at the PDGA International Disc Golf Hall of Fame. Located at Columbia County's Wildwood Park on Clarks Hill Lake, the facility provides training through its clubhouse and gear at its pro shop.

Historic Heartland

Five for Family Fun

The Historic Heartland region, in

the center of the state, is a land of

plantations, porches, peaches and

plenty of sunshine. Many of the towns

are well known for their beautiful old

homes, and many of these houses are

open for tours.

Of course, the history of

the area dates back long before

these first houses were built. The

Creek Indians lived in this region for

hundreds of years before handing

over their land to the State of Georgia

in 1825. A number of monuments and parks tell their story. There are also much older Indian artifacts and burial grounds to

Clockwise from bottom left: Lane Southern Orchards, Fort Valley; Uncle Remus Museum, Eatonton; and Go Fish Education Center, Perry.

be found in Historic Heartland

at Ocmulgee National Monument, where people lived more

than 12,000 years ago!

Macon and Athens are the two major cities in the region,

and they both have deep musical roots. Macon is home to

the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, where visitors can learn

about Georgia's famous singers and songwriters, from

James Brown to Ludacris. Rock bands like R.E.M. and the

B-52s got their start in Athens, and the annual AthFest festival brings

large numbers of musicians and their fans to the town every June. Athens

is also home to the University of Georgia and the Georgia Bulldogs. Other

famous animals that call Historic Heartland home are Brer Rabbit and his

friends from the Uncle Remus stories. Visitors can learn all about the folk

stories at a fun museum in Eatonton.

1 Seventy-six species of fish are on display in tanks and ponds at the Go Fish Education Center in Perry, offering an unparalleled opportunity to learn about Georgia's aquatic wildlife and habitats. The interactive and educational journey through Georgia's diverse watersheds serves as a great resource of fishing information for any level of angler, with tips on where to go, what gear to use and when to fish.
2 A Federal-style house in Milledgeville is where Georgia seceded from the Union in 1861 and where Sherman's troops were occupied during their March to the Sea in 1864. On the ground floor is the Old Capital Museum, which walks through state history from prehistoric times to the postCivil War era.
3 The Ocmulgee National Monument in Macon is a national park preserving an area that has been inhabited for more than 11,000 years, from the Ice Age to the Space Age. Seventy-five years ago this year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed the area a national monument.
4 Experience a landmark of Southern culture, literature and folklore at the Uncle Remus Museum in Eatonton. Built from two former slave cabins, the museum is a unique reminder of the character created by Joel Chandler Harris who shared folk stories of life in antebellum Georgia.
5 Pick peaches and more at Lane Southern Orchards in Fort Valley. The 5,000acre farm has been growing peaches and pecans for more than 100 years. Indulge in delicious barbecue and homemade dessert at Peachtree Cafe before taking field trips through the strawberry patch, orchard or corn maze.

Historic High Country

Historic High Country in Georgia's

northwest corner is a region filled with

stories of Native Americans, the Civil War

and the early pioneers and settlers who

made their homes in this land of forested

hills and mountains. The largest Indian

mounds in North America, the Etowah

Indian Mounds in Cartersville, are more

than a thousand years old. Centuries

later, the Cherokee Nation spread across

much of the region, and their capital,

New Echota, was located here

before the tribe was forced

west in the Trail of Tears. The

Native American history of the

area is shared at sites throughout

Clockwise from top left: Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park (or Lake Winnie), Rossville; Rome Braves, Rome; and Cagle's Family Farm, Canton.

Historic High Country. Many Civil War battles were
fought in Historic High Country, and visitors will discover battlefields,

military parks, monuments and

museums throughout the region. There's also a great museum that

tells the tales of cowboys and Indians.

The region is known for its beautiful scenery and natural bounty.

Visitors can explore the outdoors on the mountain roads, on foot, by bike,

on horseback or even on a train or a hang glider. Spread across the

mountains and valleys are apple orchards, pumpkin patches, vineyards

and dairies, where families may help with the harvest and meet animals.

Petting zoos are always fun, and in Historic High Country, there's even

one with miniature animals! There's also a must-see museum where

science buffs may learn about minerals, fossils, dinosaurs and the stars.

CLOCK WISE FROM BOT TOM LEF T: COURTESY OF SUNBURST STABLES; ALPINE HELEN/WHITE COUNTY CVB; COURTESY OF NORTH GEORGIA CANOPY TOURS

Northeast Mountains

Five for Family Fun

The Northeast Mountains region sits

between the Southern Appalachian and

Blue Ridge mountains. It's a wonderland

of tall peaks, beautiful forests and rushing

mountain streams and creeks. The

region is home to the tallest mountain in

Georgia, many amazing waterfalls and

Tallulah Gorge.

Known as Mother Nature's

Playground, the region offers visitors

lots of outdoor activities. Ride

horseback along a trail or soak up

the spray of a waterfall during a

picnic. Fish in a stream, relax on one of the many lakes, float on an inner tube down a lazy river or zip through the trees on a canopy tour.

Clockwise from bottom left: Sunburst Stables, Clarkesville; Tubing on Chattahoochee River, Helen; and North Georgia Canopy Tours, Lula.

The mountains are also dotted with

small towns, gristmills and covered bridges that give glimpses into bygone

days. Local museums and history centers tell the stories of the region's

Appalachian heritage, gold mining, granite, gourds, general stores, baseball

greats, medical discoveries, trains, writers, military history and folk pottery.

Though it's not as old as it looks, the entire town of Helen is designed to

look like an Old World village taken from the pages of fairy tales. Just down

the road is another magical place, BabyLand General Hospital, where the

Cabbage Patch Kids were born more than 25 years ago. The Northeast

Mountains is even home to a kangaroo farm!

Playing in the mountains makes everyone hungry, and there are

great places to eat around just about every bend in the road. Barbecue

joints and family-style restaurants are well known for their great food

and friendliness. And orchards, farms and roadside stands sell fresh,

homegrown treats.

1 Zip through the lush North Georgia treetops on one of four exhilarating canopy tours: North Georgia Canopy Tours, Chattooga Ridge Canopy Tours, Lake Lanier Canopy Tours and Sunburst Stables. Enjoy a soaring and gliding experience fueled by gradual elevation change and a visit to multiple ecosystems.
2 Through the middle of Alpine Helen runs the famous Chattahoochee River, and during the summer months, the river is flooded with people taking a relaxing ride in inner tubes. Those feeling more adventurous may be interested in taking a paddling trip on this same river south of town with Wildwood Outpost.
3 The Appalachian Trail, which begins in Georgia, is the longest continuous hiking trail in the world thanks to its 2,000-mile stretch through fourteen states. The approach trail begins at Amicalola Falls State Park and offers an example of what the Appalachian Trail offers. Plan to spend one night at the Len Foote Hike Inn.
4 More than 17,000 men trained to become paratroopers at Camp Toccoa in the early 1940s. The Currahee Military Museum explores the history of the Paratrooper Infantry as well as military history for the area's veterans of the Civil War, World War I and World War II.
5 Delight your taste buds during a tour of Mayfield Dairy in Braselton. Learn how milk makes it from dairy to fridge, catch a film on where it all began, try your hand at milking a life-sized replica cow, and complete your visit with two delicious scoops of ice cream.

Plantation Trace

Five for Family Fun

In the southwest corner of the state,

you'll find Plantation Trace. This is a region

of great plantation houses and wonderful

small towns. Agriculture and outdoor

adventure have always been important

parts of life in the area. Since the

1800s, people have visited Plantation

Trace to hunt, harvest and enjoy the

outdoors.

Today visitors can explore nature

at any of the region's state parks and spend a few hours doing some fishing, playing water sports or miniature golf or picnicking. There are also

Clockwise from bottom left: Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village, Tifton; Chehaw's Alligator Alley, Albany; and Wild Adventures, Valdosta.

boating, hiking and camping opportunities

all over the area. Plantation Trace is home to attractions that take visitors

close to the wildlife that make their home in the region's forests, fields

and swamps, as well as animals from around the world. One park, Wild

Adventures, combines animal encounters with family and thrill rides.

Museums abound in Plantation Trace. They offer something for every interest,

from science to African American history to the story of a Southern town that was

built by both Northerners and Southerners after the Civil War. There are working

farms and dairies producing some of the state's best food, including one that

shows how farmwork was done more than a hundred years ago. Visitors can

also see some of the beautiful homes and estates that give the region its name.

Plantation Trace is also well known for its rich theater culture. Local and

traveling companies put on amazing plays and musicals in old movie houses and

great local theaters. Georgia's official folklife play, Swamp Gravy, is performed

in Colquitt every year and celebrates life in rural South Georgia. Each summer

the Peach State Summer Theatre, Georgia's official musical theater, performs

Broadway-style musicals on the campus of Valdosta State University.

1 Kill two birds with one stone at Wild Adventures in Valdosta, an amusement park and zoo in one. Enjoy thrill rides, kids' rides, family rides and water rides. Try the Cheetah, a wooden coaster, or take the little ones down the Insect-O-Slide. And don't forget about the elephants, giraffes, lions, tigers and many exotic animals.
2 Step into the river without getting wet! Albany's Flint RiverQuarium, which features a unique blue-hole spring that helped create the Flint River, brings the experience of the watershed's ecosystem to you. A series of interactive exhibits affords views of more than 100 species of native aquatic life, and you won't want to miss the recent aviary addition.
3 Get up close and personal with animals found in the wild at Chehaw in Albany. The animal park features natural habitat exhibits with native and exotic species. Boardwalks take you through cypress swamps to a variety of animal exhibits. The children's farm features miniature horses, alpacas, pigs and goats.
4 If you like history, Tifton's Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College should be on your itinerary. Experience everyday life on a 19th-century-style farm by watching and learning about activities like harvesting, cooking and quilt making. Each structure includes period furnishings, adding to the authentic feel.
5 Rev your engines with a visit to Cecil's South Georgia Motorsports Park. Watch track events held on both the dragway and the speedway. The park includes one of only two all-concrete, quarter-mile drag strips in North America.

Presidential Pathways

Five for Family Fun

The Presidential Pathways region in

west-central Georgia earned its moniker

because two American presidents were

greatly influenced by the area. Jimmy

Carter, our 39th president, was born in

the small town of Archery and started

his 1976 campaign in nearby Plains.

Franklin D. Roosevelt, our longest-

serving president, built the only house he

ever owned, known as the Little White

House, in Warm Springs. He spent

time in the rural community recharging

from the work of fighting the Great

Depression and World War II and

relaxing in the area's mineral waters.

The region's historical offerings do not stop there. There are a village set
in 1850s West Georgia, restored movie palaces,

Clockwise from bottom left: Kauffman's Farmarket, Montezuma; Wild Animal Safari, Pine Mountain; and Coca-Cola Space Science Center, Columbus.

house museums with antique

furniture, and historic gardens in Presidential Pathways.

The military has maintained a large influence in the region

since the Civil War, and today Columbus is a major city for military

operations as the home of Army post Fort Benning. Visitors may

learn all about the military of the past and the present at any of the

area's many military sites and museums. They may also tour the

cemetery and memorials found at one of the Confederacy's largest

military prisons, located in Andersonville.

In addition to its rich history, Presidential Pathways is also known

for its natural wonders, especially Providence Canyon, Georgia's "Little Grand

Canyon." There are science centers, animal parks, a butterfly garden and a

working cattle ranch owned by Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy.

1 Operated by Columbus State University, the Coca-Cola Space Science Center in Columbus houses a Challenger Learning Center, a world-class planetarium, Omnisphere theater, the Mead Observatory and many interactive exhibits and displays.
2 For a hands-on safari experience, check out the 500-acre Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari, where visitors can see, touch and feed hundreds of exotic animals from every continent.
3 The 25-year-old Kauffman's Farmarket, a strawberry U-Pick farm outside of Montezuma, also specializes in peaches, blackberries, figs and vegetables. Hour-and-fifteen-minute educational tours include a small basket of berries, a hayride, a small cup of ice cream, and a chance to pet and feed goats in the pasture and chickens in the barn.
4 Introduce yourself to agricultural life in Georgia: Experience farm life, get to know farm crops and meet a variety of farm animals at Meadowgate Farm, recently opened to the public and located on 50 acres just outside of Woodbury. Enjoy hayrides, bonfires and a visit to Nana's Country Barn store.
5 Habitat for Humanity calls Americus home, and its headquarters features a Global Village and Discovery Center where visitors can check out Habitat houses from around the world, learn about poverty and participate in handson exhibits.
