Perhaps the most exciting ways for little adventurers to experience the great outdoors at the parks and historic sites are through two new recreational challenges: the Georgia State Parks Geo-Challenge and the Georgia History Trail. More than 40 of Georgia's state parks joined one of the largest treasure hunts on the planet with the launch of the Geo-Challenge, and the concept is simple: Adventure seekers use a GPS unit to find hidden treasures. Players download a PassPort from georgiastateparks. org, find hidden stamps in each cache to spell out the PassPort's message and collect custom geocoins. Caches are hidden in publicaccess areas, so treasure hunters won't venture off trails or into remote locations. Similarly, the newly launched Georgia History Trail, another geocaching game, will require players to answer questions about historic sites in order to get the combination to the cache. Inside historic site caches are trading cards. Geocaching is the perfect blend of technology, trails and trees, and these programs offer players the opportunities to exercise--while learning about Georgia history. Speaking of exercise, this summer Georgia's state parks and historic sites launch its Tons of Fun Weight-Loss Challenge to encourage families to exercise together, to improve their health through organized activities and to lose weight. The goal is for Georgians to lose 1 million pounds. Register online or at any state park beginning in June. Another exciting launch this year: The Chattahoochee Bend State Park in Coweta County makes its debut. At nearly 3,000 acres, it is one of Georgia's largest state parks, protecting seven miles of river frontage. Families can picnic near the river, hike a half-mile to an observation platform and play on a playground with rubber-tire base. Civil War battles were fought in the area before General Sherman burned the city to the ground in 1864. Margaret Mitchell wrote Gone With the Wind, the best-selling book in the world after the Bible, while living in Atlanta, and Coca-Cola was also created here. The birthplace of Martin Luther King Jr., Atlanta also served as home base for many key leaders and organizations of the civil rights movement. And in 1996, Atlanta welcomed the world when it hosted the Summer Olympics. Atlanta Metro is an exciting place Clockwise from bottom left: Center for Puppetry Arts, Atlanta; Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta; and Fernbank Museum of Natural History's NatureQuest, Atlanta. filled with sparkling skyscrapers, sports stadiums, big parks and great museums. It's home to people--and animals--from around the world. Visitors will discover a large zoo, animal parks and the world's biggest aquarium. Outdoors, the area offers recreation and respite in the form of rafting on the Chattahoochee, biking on miles of non-motorized trails and hiking along one of the world's largest pieces of exposed granite. Thrill seekers will find plenty of activities to choose from in Atlanta Metro, from theme parks with rides for all ages to water parks for cooling off. Sports enthusiasts will find there's almost always a game in town; the Braves, Falcons, Hawks and Thrashers all play in Atlanta. The region's many theaters and performing arts centers present concerts, plays, Broadway musicals and ballet. Atlanta is also home to science centers where visitors can see dinosaurs and look at the stars, art museums where they can create masterpieces of their own, and a puppetry center where they can catch a show and see the characters. There's even one museum just for kids. 1 Children--and the young at heart--won't want to miss the Fernbank Museum of Natural History's newest permanent exhibit, NatureQuest, which invites visitors into a working clubhouse built among the giant trees. Visitors can climb up a tree and cross elevated rope bridges for an aerial view of the immense expedition that awaits. Special interactive opportunities exist in every nook and cranny. 2 The Georgia Aquarium recently welcomed 12 new residents: bottlenose dolphins. The 1.3 million-gallon exhibit includes dolphin encounters, viewing windows and dolphin shows from the comfort of a brand-new, state-of-the-art theater. 3 Get up close and personal with puppets at the Center for Puppetry Arts. Families will be educated, enlightened and entertained through curriculumbased workshops, enchanting performances and the hands-on museum. 4 Designate one evening "Nature Night" and head out with the family for a night hike; visit with nocturnal animals up close, play games in the meadow and warm up by the campfire at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. 5 Fulfill every little girl's dream with a visit to the American Girl Boutique and Bistro. General James Oglethorpe founded the city on the bluff overlooking the Savannah River and designed it with wide, open streets and shady public squares. Most of the original squares still exist and are filled with great oak trees and flowering plants. The city is also known for its many surviving historic mansions. Museums, monuments and lighthouses transport you to another time or place. Clockwise from bottom left: Fort King George State Historic Site, Darien; Tybee Island Beach, Tybee Island ; and Tybee Island Light Station, Tybee Island. Whatever interests you, from planes, trains and ships to African American history and art, there's a museum for you to explore. Many are outdoors, including lighthouses and forts. Nature lovers flock to the Coast, too. More than a dozen islands protect the Georgia coast, and they are home to a variety of animals and wildlife. Wild horses run on the beaches of Cumberland Island, sea turtles nest on island shores and more than 300 types of birds call the islands home. The famous Okefenokee Swamp is also located in the region, and visitors just might catch a glimpse of alligators, black bears, bald eagles and even carnivorous plants. But if all you want to do is play on the beach, enjoy miles and miles of it from Tybee Island near Savannah to the stretches of the Golden Isles. Five for Family Fun 1 Play and splash along more than 90 miles of pristine beaches from Savannah's Tybee, Jekyll and St. Simons islands to the not-to-be-missed Cumberland. Go swimming, surfing or kayaking or hop on the Lady Jane for a shrimping expedition. 2 Locals and tourists alike enjoy taking part in Savannah Fun Tours' self-guided scavenger hunt competitions, which make learning about the city and its storied history great fun. 3 Lighthouses and forts offer fabulously fun insight into the Coast's history, and there are a handful of great ones in the area. Tybee Island Light Station and Museum has been guiding mariners' safe entrance into the Savannah River for more than 270 years. Neighboring Fort Pulaski National Monument, also on Tybee, marked the first significant use of rifled cannons in combat. 4 The largest and most complete antebellum railroad repair facility is still in existence at the Roundhouse Railroad Museum in Savannah. Secretary of State Robert Toombs are located here, and the area acted as General Sherman's headquarters during the March to the Sea. Visitors can enjoy countless other historic sites and museums displaying war relics, including the lost Confederate treasure chest at the Mary Willis Library in Washington. Augusta is the second-oldest and second-largest city in Georgia, and like the rest of the Classic South region, it has a long, proud history. The construction of the Augusta Canal in 1847 made Augusta the second-largest cotton market in the world, and the city's Confederate Powderworks was the only structure ever built by the Confederate States of America. By the late 1800s, the Augusta area was a major resort destination, drawing wealthy Northerners who built winter mansions. Today, Augusta has nine neighborhoods on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as many historic monuments and cemeteries. Many people associate Augusta and the Classic South region with golf because the city is home to the world-famous Masters Tournament, which was started in 1934 by golf legend (and native Georgian) Bobby Jones. But Augusta is also known as the water sports capital of the Southeast and is the site of several annual international events, including the Augusta Invitational Rowing Regatta, the Head of the South Rowing Regatta and the Augusta Southern Nationals. The region's many waterways host races and tournaments of all sorts, from rowing and sailing to fishing. It's a wonderland of tall peaks, beautiful forests and rushing mountain streams and creeks. The region is home to the tallest mountain in Georgia, many amazing waterfalls and Tallulah Gorge. Known as Mother Nature's Playground, the region offers visitors lots of outdoor activities. Ride horseback along a trail or soak up the spray of a waterfall during a picnic. Fish in a stream, relax on one of the many lakes, float on an inner tube down a lazy river or zip through the trees on a canopy tour. Clockwise from bottom left: Sunburst Stables, Clarkesville; Tubing on Chattahoochee River, Helen; and North Georgia Canopy Tours, Lula. The mountains are also dotted with small towns, gristmills and covered bridges that give glimpses into bygone days. Local museums and history centers tell the stories of the region's Appalachian heritage, gold mining, granite, gourds, general stores, baseball greats, medical discoveries, trains, writers, military history and folk pottery. Though it's not as old as it looks, the entire town of Helen is designed to look like an Old World village taken from the pages of fairy tales. Just down the road is another magical place, BabyLand General Hospital, where the Cabbage Patch Kids were born more than 25 years ago. The Northeast Mountains is even home to a kangaroo farm! Playing in the mountains makes everyone hungry, and there are great places to eat around just about every bend in the road. Barbecue joints and family-style restaurants are well known for their great food and friendliness. And orchards, farms and roadside stands sell fresh, homegrown treats. 1 Zip through the lush North Georgia treetops on one of four exhilarating canopy tours: North Georgia Canopy Tours, Chattooga Ridge Canopy Tours, Lake Lanier Canopy Tours and Sunburst Stables. Enjoy a soaring and gliding experience fueled by gradual elevation change and a visit to multiple ecosystems. 2 Through the middle of Alpine Helen runs the famous Chattahoochee River, and during the summer months, the river is flooded with people taking a relaxing ride in inner tubes. Those feeling more adventurous may be interested in taking a paddling trip on this same river south of town with Wildwood Outpost. 3 The Appalachian Trail, which begins in Georgia, is the longest continuous hiking trail in the world thanks to its 2,000-mile stretch through fourteen states. The approach trail begins at Amicalola Falls State Park and offers an example of what the Appalachian Trail offers. Plan to spend one night at the Len Foote Hike Inn. 4 More than 17,000 men trained to become paratroopers at Camp Toccoa in the early 1940s. Visitors can also see some of the beautiful homes and estates that give the region its name. Plantation Trace is also well known for its rich theater culture. Local and traveling companies put on amazing plays and musicals in old movie houses and great local theaters. Georgia's official folklife play, Swamp Gravy, is performed in Colquitt every year and celebrates life in rural South Georgia. Each summer the Peach State Summer Theatre, Georgia's official musical theater, performs Broadway-style musicals on the campus of Valdosta State University. 1 Kill two birds with one stone at Wild Adventures in Valdosta, an amusement park and zoo in one. Jimmy Carter, our 39th president, was born in the small town of Archery and started his 1976 campaign in nearby Plains. Franklin D. Roosevelt, our longest- serving president, built the only house he ever owned, known as the Little White House, in Warm Springs. He spent time in the rural community recharging from the work of fighting the Great Depression and World War II and relaxing in the area's mineral waters.
