Georgia's New Driver's Licenses & IDs

Permanent Laminated Card

In 2009, the Department of Driver Services (DDS) began issuing more secure driver's licenses and identification cards for Georgia residents.
The cards have a dramatically different look and feel and are the most secure that our state has ever issued!
Advantages of the new licensing process include increased fraud protection, added security features and machine-readable technology. I t will be harder to steal someone's identity or counterfeit a license. This will make Georgia safer by ensuring that only those that should be driving will be issued a license.
Not only does the new licensing system provide more security, but it enhances DDS' customer service efforts.
Modern technology allows a faster issuance process which benefits both customers and employees. A new data management system includes electronic imaging to scan documents where they may be easily accessed later.
The new processes enable DDS to provide even faster, friendlier and easier service. More importantly, they will ensure that Georgia continues to protect the integrity and security of one of our State's most important processes.

Interim
A new security practice is the issuance of an Interim license or ID for first issuance or renewal to each customer at DDS' centers. This process will help combat identity theft by allowing DDS to verify photographs stored in the system with customers presenting themselves for new documents. The Interim is generally valid up to 45 days, when a Permanent Laminated license or ID is mailed to the customers' address on file with DDS. All Interims are printed on special security paper and include a photo and signature. Data on the front of the card can be validated by reading the unencrypted 2-D barcode, and there are many other security features. The Interim is acceptable as proof of identity.

Keep Address Current
Customers MUST keep their address current with DDS. Permanent Laminated documents are mailed to the customers' address on file with DDS. For security, documents can not be forwarded or delivered to a Post Office Address and will be returned to DDS undeliverable. Customers may be eligible for a free online address change.
