What you need to know about your first driver's license!

Learner's Permit (Class CP)
Fifteen-year-olds can apply for a learner's permit. You will need the following when you visit a Customer Service Center:
A Georgia DDS Certificate of Attendance form must be signed and notarized from your school. It is only valid for 30 days.
Proper identification. You may present an original birth certificate, passport, certified copy of your birth certificate, certificate ofbirth registration, certified copy of court records (adoption, name changes), certified naturalization records or immigration card.
A parent or legal guardian will have to sign for you.
Proof of a social security number is required to issue a license.
2 proofs of Georgia residency. School records, report cards and a parent's driver's license are among acceptable proofs ofresidency for minors.

All applicants must pass a two part knowledge exam pertaining to Road Rules and Road Signs. All questions are based on material contained in the Georgia Driver's Manual available online at www.dds.ga.gov.

The knowledge exam is conducted on a walk in basis at all Customer Service Centers. Testing must begin at least 30 minutes before office closing time. Check www.dds.ga.gov for hours and locations.
The permit fee is $10.00 cash, money order, check, or credit/debit cards and is paid before the test begins. The $10 fee is forfeited if you fail the test. The $10 permit fee would be paid again at the next test attempt.
The permit holder is only allowed to drive with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and is seated in the front seat ofthe car beside the driver at all times.
Provisional Driver's License (Class D)
After having a valid learner's permit for one full year and a day, you may apply for your first driver's license.
Appointments for on-the-road tests are recommended and may be made up to 90 days in advance. The reservation number is (678) 413-8500, select option 3 or call (866) 754-3687 (if dialing from outside the metro-Atlanta area).
Driver Education. If you are 16 years old, you must complete a driver education course approved by DDS. You also must have completed a cumulative

total of at least forty hours ofother supervised driving experience, including at least six hours at night. For a list of DDS approved driver education programs visit www.dds.ga.gov.
Those individuals who do not complete an approved driver education course must wait until age 17 to become licensed.

You must have successfully passed and have a certificate of completion from the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program (ADAP). For information about ADAP, you may visit www.dds.ga.gov or call (678) 413-8400).
The vehicle you test in must be properly insured, registered, have a valid tag and must pass a safety inspection. You will be asked to show a valid insurance card. You may take the test in a rental vehicle provided certain conditions are met.
You must pass an on-the-road driving test.
The license fee is $10.00 cash, money order, check, credit or debit.
Class D Driving Restrictions
Curfew: Any Class D license holder shall not drive between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 6:00 a.m.

Passenger restrictions: Any Class D license holder shall not drive with any non-related passengers during the six month period following issuance. During the second six-month period, any Class D license holder shall not drive a motor vehicle upon the public roads, streets or highways ofthis state when more than one other passenger in the vehicle (who is not a member of the driver's immediate family) is less than 21 years of age. After the second sixmonth period, any Class D license holder shall not drive when more than three other passengers in the vehicle who are not immediate family members are less than 21 years of age.
At age 18, a driver may exchange a Class D restricted license for a Class C "Under 21" unrestricted license.
New Secure License Process

Interim
Customers are issued an Interim License (or ID) printed on secure paper. It includes a photo and signature. It is

valid for 45 days.
Remove the Interim from the receipt. Fold the Interim and place in your wallet. File the receipt in a safe place.

Permanent
A permanent license/ID will be mailed to your address on file with DDS before the Interim expiration date. To protect your identity, please destroy the Interim when the permanent is received.
