AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: WE SHALL REMAIN
From PBS's acclaimed history series, American Experience, in association with Native American Public Telecommunications (NAPT), this groundbreaking mini-series establishes Native historyas an essential part of American history. Five 90-minute documentaries spanning three hundred years tell the story of pivotal moments in U.S. history from the Native American perspective . Beginning in the 1600s with the Wampanoags, who used their alliance with the English to strengthen their position in Southern New England, and ending with the bold new leaders of the 1970s, who harnessed the momentum of the Civil Rights Movement to forge a pan-Indian identity, We Shall Remain upends two-dimensional stereotypes of American Indians as simply ferocious warriors or peaceable lovers of the land.

NOVA
DOCTORS' DIARIES

One of Charles Dickens' greatest love stories also has the timely theme of chronic debt and financial col lapse. Adapted by screenwriter extraordinaire Andrew Davies ("Bleak House," "Pride and Prejudice"), the five-part miniseries stars Matthew Macfadyn (Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightley) as hero Arthur Clennam, newcomer Claire Foy as Amy "Little" Dorrit and Tom Courtenay (The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner) as her father, who has been incarcerated for 25 years for insolvency. Scores of other great actors appear in this moving tale that was particularly close to Dickens' heart, since his own father did time in debtor's prison.
Sundays, March 29 - April 26, 9 PM

Over the past 21 years, NOVA has followed a group of seven doctors from their first day at Harvard Medical School in 1987. All young, bright and accomplished , none of them could have predicted what it would take, personally and professionally, to become a member of the medical tribe. NOVA's cameras have been there through the difficult years of classes and clinical training, internship and residency, marriage and divorce - documenting the trials and tribulations as these i~dividuals struggled to become doctors and to balance time at work and at home. Candid in-depth interviews have given viewers a real sense of what each person has to deal with day in and day out since he or she made the decision to practice medicine. In this special two-part program , NOVA returns one last time to get an update on the kind of doctors- and people- they have become.

Producer'sSpotlight

Online. On the Radio. On the Go.

"What's your radio show about?" It's a question I often get about Georgia Gazette. As Host and Executive Producer, I should be the authority on what defines this show. But how can I sum up into one, tidy response our coverage of politics, news, culture, music, and history, plus our Facebook poll, listener emails and state park giveaways? Georgia Gazette is about Georgia. Explaining what the show is about is like explaining what Georgia is about. Even a born-and-bred Georgian might struggle to verbalize an explanation. So, to me, it's a good sign that I can't easily answer that question. It means we're doing this show, which is all about Georgia, right.

Georgia Gazette has more than 6oo Facebook followers. Many take part in our weekly Facebook Poll. Others log on to our website (ww.gpb.org/Georgiagazette) to view the daily video promo.
We get dozens of e-mails each week with comments on our stories and answers to our weekly riddle. One lucky respondent wins a year pass into Georgia's 65 state parks and historic sites. When we celebrated our one-year anniversary in January, listeners competed for home-baked birthday desserts by sending in creative birthday wishes. Among our winners was Kat Canella (pictured) of Columbus who sang us the Happy Birthday song. Her prize was a German apple pie baked by our Managing Editor Susanna Capelouto.

Georgia Gazette's mission is simple: to impact Georgians. We succeed because members of our news team are living and working in communities across the state - Josephine Bennett in Macon, Mary Ellen Cheatham and Noel Brown in Augusta, Orlando Montoya in Savannah, Dave Bender in Columbus and John Sepulvado in Rome. In Atlanta, Valarie Edwards, Susanna Capelouto, and Carl Zornes cover the state Capitol. Holding down the fort at our Atlanta studios are Melissa Stiers, Amanda Scott, Edgar Treiguts, Myriam Levy, and interns from Georgia colleges. Our impact ranges from light-hearted to profound. One example comes from our June 2008 series "The Chemical in the Conasauga," in which John Sepulvado reported on a likely carcinogenic chemical in the northwest Georgia river. After hearing the reports, a local doctor arranged to pay to test the water in his community. In January, as Georgia's unemployment rate crept toward a historic high, I visited a Department of Labor job center. I interviewed an unemployed truck driver. The day after the interview aired, the owner of a Savannah company called me for the man's contact information to offer him a job. Our success is also measurable in the 1,004 listeners who responded as new or renewing members during the February "I Love GPB" Membership Campaign.

Many listeners have a sense of ownership of Georgia Gazette . And rightly so -- it's truly local. It's ours. Even our theme music was composed by Athens native, Atlanta-based and Grammy-winning producer Ben H. Allen. Yet we are always expanding our reach. We have a Saturday and Sunday presence with Weeke nd Gazette, hosted by Valarie Edwards. We now post our content on Twitter.com. You can watch and read as our reporters at the state Capitol "live blog" House and Senate debates on controversial bills. Our free, daily podcast is now available on iTunes.
Ge o rgia Gazette covers today's news and information, but it also represents the future. Georgians, and particularly public radio listeners, will always need honest, Intelligent, in-depth coverage of our communities, how they connect to each other and how we all connect as a state. Ge orgia Gazette does this - it connects Georgians to Georgia. This program helps us define who we are as Georgians. So whether we need to define Georgia or Georgia Gazette, I hope that with every show we all get closer to the answer.

"A decade of work as a disaster mental health counselor for the American Red Cross helped prepare me to develop Georgia's new comprehensive disaster mental health Web site,
www.georgiadisaster.info. Created entirely by our faculty, staff and students, this resource is sponsored by the Georgia DHR using federal funds from the Community Health
Preparedness Program. This is only one of many ways that UWG is dedicated to serving Georgia and the nation."
