Historian Michael Wood on

THE STORY OF INDIA

Michael Wood

Mondays,
j anuary 5 - 19,
9-llPM
on GPB Television

"I've loved India for a long time," says historian and broadcaster Michael Wood. "Personally, travelling across it with my wife and children and, of course, for a historian too, it is an amazing country history is still so very much alive there!"

His new PBS series, T he Story of India, is Wood's epic labor of love, made with enough enthusiasm ro fit his immense subject. He first proposed it more than 15 years ago, knowing rhar India would soon "loom large in our future." As the wo rld's largest democracy, India also is a rising economic giant, now as well-known for its high-tech computer brilliance as for its gods and gurus. "Wirhin 10 years," says Wood, "India's population will be bigger than that of Ch ina, and its economy is pred icted ro overtake that of America in rhe 2030s- bur remember rhat it's an increasingly important friend and admirer of America, roo"
Ir was anorher dozen years before rhe idea was taken up by PBS and Wood set out ro trace rhe srory of rhe world's most ancient surviving civilization. He has filmed as far afield as Pakistan, Nepal, Turkmenistan and Iraq. "It is quite complex," underseares Wood . "We had a lot ro do . . ."
He acknowledges that India still faces many challenges. "Global warming is an even bigger problem when population growth is not controlled . There is great rural poverty and

inequal ity of wealth and still widespread violence against women. "
Yet he found India a wonderful place to work and loved every minute of ir. "Ir has been such a privilege to be a guest in anorher culture, to experience so many things - like a huge festival on a sacred mountain or dawn on the banks of the Ganges with 25 million orher people ... "
Best of all have been "rhe inti mare moments of simply being with people: eating wirh a traditional Tamil family or wirh the crew of an old wooden sailing boat in rhe Arabian sea, grinding spices and eating a special biryani at rhe end of Eid, listening to rhe muezzin and watching rhe sun going down. "
"The hardest bit has been back in the cutting room, condensing it down against rhe clock to a manageable format. " As for India, he says, enthusiasm entirely undimmed, "It was all good. "
To learn more about India- irs hisrory, modernity and where it is go ing- watch M ichael Wood in The'Story of India, airing Mondays, January 5-19, 9 -11 PM on GPB Television.

GPB Provides Multi-Platform News Coverage of the 2009 Georgia General Assembly

GPB's David Zelski (left) and Susanna Capelouto on the set of Georgia Votes 2008.

(Left) WABE's Charles Edwards joins GPB Radio's Rickey Bevington in the studio for Georgia Votes 2008.

Following its innovative joint national and statewide local Election Night coverage that included live radio updates and a television broadcast and web stream of the special Georgia Votes 2008 , along with content from PBS and NPR, GPB will once again utilize the resources of its reporting staff for the long-running television series Lawmakers, GPB Radio News, and www.gpb.org to provide comprehensive coverage to viewers, listeners and web users, of the 2009 Georgia General Assembly.
GPB Radio News Director Susanna Capelouto and Lawmakers Managing Editor and Executive Producer Ashlie Wilson spoke with experience about how GPB 's television and radio production reams and reporters will collaborate even more closely this year to provide multiple options for Georgians to receive crucial news and legislative analysis.
"GPB provides more broadcast coverage of the Georgia General Assembly than any other new outlet in the state, " said Wilson. "I would also say that as public broadcasters, we bring a new level of depth to legislative coverage because we do not operate under the time constraints of

--~---~-

--

Law makers

commercial networks. With GPB, you can count on more than just a fifteen second sound bite. We always strive for fairness, accuracy and analysis in all that we do."
When the General Assembly is in session GPB Television will air Lawmakers each weeknight at 7 PM, beginning on Monday, January 12 as the legislative session begins. Hosted by David Zelski and Nwandi Lawson, the program also encores on GPB Knowledge at 7 PM. For the first rime, Lawmakers will also be broadcast over GPB Radio each weeknight at 8 PM. Lawmakers is also streamed live at www.gpb.org/lawmakers. Web users can also watch past episodes of Lawmakers online at the site. To find out the latest information from Lawmakers, visit the blog, http:/I georgialawmakers. blogspot .com.
GPB Radio will have at least five reporters at the State Capiro! reporting on the legislative activities. Listeners can hear the reportS as part of GPB Radio's daily broadcast of Georgia Gazette with host Rickey Bevington at 6 PM (7 PM

on Athens WUGA 91.7 FM.) Listeners can also hear the legislative repor ts during the daily newscasts heard during the broadcast of Morning Edition and All T h ings Considered . Capelouto and GPB Radio reporter Valarie Edwards will also contribute reporrs to Lawmakers. GPB Radio reporters will post legislative stories to the GPB Radio news blog at www.gpb.org/radio , as well as the Lawmakers blog at h t t p : / /georgialawmakers.blogspot .c o m
According to Capelouto, she believes the budget will be the key issue to dominate the legislative session, as the stare is trying to adjust to the financial downturn in the economy, which is causing reductions in stare revenue. She also cited transportation, taxes, education and funding for a trauma care network in the stare as likely hot topics.
So how will people benefit from following our daily coverage and what will they get from GPB that regular local news does nor offer to them?
"As they say, ''All politics are local,' stares Capelouro. "Local communities are affected by actions on the state level. Stare Budget cuts will affect roads, education and healthcare in the state and GPB will keep you informed on the most pressing legislative issues of the day. "

A Programming Note About The Infinite Mind
Longtime listeners to The Infinite Mind will be saddened to hear that this program ceased production at the end of 2008 . For a decade, West 47th Street Productions and Lichtenstein Creative Media brought public radio listeners the latest in neuroscience, mental health , and issues related to the mind. While the producers of The Infinite Mind will produce occasional , one-off productions on these topics, The Infinite Mind will no longer run as a weekly program. GPB feels like these issues are important to us all as Georgians, and we wi ll continue to cover these issues inside of our newscasts, on Georgia Gazette, and on other programs as the topic matter is deemed appropriate.

The
Infinite
Mind

In place of The Infinite Mind , GPB radio will feature a re-broadcast of Speaking of Faith with Krista Tippett on Sunday nights at 9 PM. We've spoken with a number of members who are unable to listen to Speaking of Faith on Sunday mornings at 10 AM, so we will give all of our listeners an additional chance each week to hear this Peabody Award-Winning program with the new Sunday night re-broadcast. For more information about The Infinite Mind you can visit their website at www.lcmedia.com. Speaking of Faith's website is at www.speakingoffaith.publicradio .org .

StoryCorps Comes To Savannah

GPB and WSVH and our community partners are bringing America's most dynamic oral history program to Savannah this month . Since 2003, tens of thousands of every day people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorps. From January 29 through February 21 , Storycorps will be in Savannah. The StoryCorps program is regularly heard on radio during NPR's Morning Edition and News And Notes. This oral history program starts from the viewpoint that "listening is an act of love. " Begun by Award-Winning Documentary Producer Robert lsay, StoryCorps travels the country, collecting the oral histories of friends and loved ones, one conversation at a time. The conversations are collected and a copy is given to the participants, and with their permission , the interviews are then forwarded to the Library of Congress to be archived for future generations.
The distinctive StoryCorps MobileBooth Airstream TrailerStudio will be stopping in front of Savannah's iconic Telfair Square, adjacent to the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences, with oral history interviews beginning January 27

StoryCorps ~
and continuing through February 21. StoryCorps is partnering with GPB and our Savannah station WSVH 91.1 FM, as well as a number of community groups. WSVH Station Manager Eric Nauert appreciates both StoryCorps and the opportunity for people in the coastal community to participate. "Given Savannah's rich history and colorful characters I think it's entirely appropri?te and exciting that StoryCorps has chosen to spend some time on these cobblestone streets ." For information on how you can participate in StoryCorps during their Georgia visit, you can go to our special web page for this initiative at www.gpb.org/ storycorpssavannah.

GPB Goes Digital.
It's true . If you haven't heard, television across the country is changing to a new, digital format called DTV (digital television)! Georgia Public Broadcasting 's broadcast engineers have been working tirelessly for the past year to construct new digital transmitter towers at our network locations in Atlanta, Augusta, Albany, Chatsworth, Columbus, Dawson, Macon, Savannah and Waycross in order to offer you more quality programming with improved picture quality and sound! Beginning this February , GPB will broadcast ONLY in digital, so now is a great time to make sure you are DTV Ready and that you can receive GPB! If you receive your TV through an antenna or "rabbit ears" and you currently do not subscribe to cable or satellite, the TV's in your home will be affected by this transition.
More Quality. More Programming. More Choices.
