Masterpiece's The Complete Jane Austen ((Pride and Prejudice" Sunaays at 9 PM, June 1-15

Colin Firth (Bridget jones' Diary) is Mr. Darcy and jennifer Ehle (The Coast of Utopia) is Eli zabeth Bennet in the definiti ve adaptati on of "Pride and Prejudice;' th e most-loved of all jane Austen novels. With fi ve daughters, no sons and an entailed estate, the elder Bennets are in dire straits as they try to arrange adva ntageous marriages. Wedding bells ring th ree times, but the path to true love is tortuous indeed. "Pride and Prejudice" airs Sundays, June 1-15 at 9 PM on GPB.
Prolific, award -w inning, and seemingly fea rl ess, Andrew Dav ies is one of telev ision's most sought-a fter writer . It's perhaps no surprise, then, that he's well represented in Masterpiece's presentation of Th e Complete jane Austen, with four of th e six Austen titles to his credit.

Dav ies is, many Masterpiece fans will reca ll, the crea tive ge nius behind the wet frilly shirt scene in 1995's "Pride and Prejudice" that made Colin Firth an international hea rtthrob. He also wrote I996's "Emm a; sta rring Kate Becki nsale, as well as new adaptations of " orthanger Abbey" and "Sense and Sen ibility".
Masterpiece rece ntly ca ught up with Dav ies to talk about his work and the enduring popularity of jane Austen's novels.

Andrew Davies

Q: You've said that you tried not to think about what Austen purists would say when you were writing these adaptations. How do you stay true to the spirit of an author's work and also make it your own? A: It wasn't too much of a difficulty in thi s case, because I'm a passionate admirer ofAusten, and I frequently reread her. I wouldn't really have her other than she is. On the other hand, a television drama is a television drama, and it is a different animal than a novel. Sometimes it's necessary to supply things that Austen somehow forgot to include, but to keep them very much in the spirit of what she did write.

Q: How do you adapt Austen for a contemporary audience? A: One of the reasons Austen gets adapted aga in and aga in is that her themes are timeless. They're about love, how to get by in the world without sacrificing your principles, and the pull between fasc inating villains and seeminglydull but deserving men.Austen was adept at providing satisfying endings,so that if a man seems a bit dull at the beginning, we begin to see what a wonderful, complex, interesting and attractive man he is by the end. Q: While we're on the topic of manly scenes, a group of American women became so addicted to the Colin Firth wet shirt scene in "Pride and

Prejudice" that they had to form a support group. What do you make of that? A: Yes, they call themselves The Republic of Pemberley. The group was started in a joking, tongue-incheek way, but it has developed into quite a serious jane Austen appreciation society. About four or five years ago, several of the women traveled to England, and !met them.Theywere lovely. Theywatch all of the adaptations and discuss them online. Q: A criticism of Austen's work is that it's "girl meets boy, they have a falling out, they patch it up and everybody lives happily ever after:' Is that a mischaracterization? If so, why?

A: It's an oversimplification, but it is true. The basic plots of her novels are often very much like the plots of simple romantic novels or even fairy stories.Where Austen's work differs, however, is in its enormous intelligence and hardheadedness. She's never sentimental in a bad way. She never indulges in emotion for its own sake. She always makes us aware of the hard facts of life: how much things cost, how much everybody earns, and how important that is.We know how important all the gradations of class are. And she balances things like good luck against intelligence. She's continuallydoing those subtle balancing acts, which I find absolutely fascinating.

Drop By The Mundo Lounge, Saturday Nights at 11 PM On GPB Radio

Saturday night listeners to GPB Radio have a whole new taste for your musical palate with the debut of The Mundo Lounge. This new program airs Saturday nights at II PM, following Bluegrass Breakdown. The Mundo Lounge is the creation of GPB Production Coordinator Amanda "Ms. Unique" Scott. Most days at GPB Amanda works behind the scenes, making sure that Georgia Gazette, GPB news and feature stories, Agenda Hispana and special editions of Studio GPB see the light of the broadcast day. The Mundo Lounge is a chance for her to take you on a musical journey, through the worlds of French oul, Middle Eastern Dub, Afro-Cuban and other music from around the world. The show builds on a program she hosted while in college at Brenau in Gainesville a few years back.

Accord ing to Ms. Un ique, "The global sounds of The Mundo Lounge will allow you to have

Cover to Cover Introduces The Southern Lit Cadre

Long-time GPB Radio fans of Cover To Cover have noticed a change in the program in recent weeks. St. john Flynn, a GPB Mainstay and host of the show for many years, accepted a position as Director of Cultural Programming at KUH F, which is Houston, Texas's public radio station. He also hosts and blogs a program called The Front Row. You can keep up with St. John's latest projects by visiting kuhf.org.
We didn't want to abandon the outhern Literary heritage that Cover To Cover represents, so we have re-tooled the program and introduced the GPB Southern Lit Cadre, a group of distinctive Southern voices interviewing Georgia writers, Southern writers, and writers dealing with the outh. The GPB outhern Lit Cadre and the new Cover To Cover will provide you with a varied, weeklyglimpse at fiction, non-fiction, memoir, history, poetry, and even the occasional'old school' nod to Flannery O'Connor or William Faulkner.

We'll introduce our cadre members to you one at a time, starting with this month's Preview. The Cover To Cover poetry 'beat' is held down by Cadre Member jeff Ca lder. Calder grew up in Charleston, South Carolina and Lakeland, Florida. At the Unive rsity of Florida he studied creative writing under Harry Crews. Upon graduation from UF in I973, he pursued a career as a Florida-based free-lance writer, covering the pop music and litera ry scenes for the Tampa Tribune, Lakeland Ledger, Zoo World, Atlanta Gazette and Hittin' the Note. He was also a Random otes stringer for Rolling Stone.
Calder moved to Atlanta in 1978 to form the legendary Swimming Pool Q's with Bob Elsey and Anne Richmond Boston. The Q's were one of the pioneering New Wave bands in the South. The group has released manyalbu ms, their most recent being Royal Academy ofReality in 2003. The Q's celebrate their 30th Anniversary in 2008.

Over the years, Calder has written for the Atlanta journal-Constitution,South AtlanticQuarterly, Mix Magazine, and Stomp and Stammer, among other publications. His popular long essay, "Living By
ight in the Land of Opportunity: Reflections on Life in a Rock & Roll Band," was included in Duke University's South Atlantic Quarterly (Fall, 199 1), ed ited byAnthony DeCurtis of Rolling Stone. His appreciation of Richard & Mimi Farina aired on
ational Public Radio's All Things Considered in December 1999.
So far for the new Cover To Cover, jeff has interviewed UGA Press Poets Ed Pavlicand Sean Hill about thei r books of poetry about Donnie Hathawayand Milledgeville, Georgia respectively. We hope that you enjoy jeff's contributions to the new Cover To Cover, as well Cover To Cover's companion program What's The Word, from the Modern Language Association. Cover to Cover airs Sunday nights at 8 PM, followed by What's The Word at 8:30PM.
