ABCs of DTV

A nalog Television is going away. Period. Georgia Public Broadcasting and other broadcasters will make the switch to digital television (DTV) transmission on February 17, 2009. After this date, analog television sets (even the ones in your garage) will cease to work. But don't throw your TV set out just yet, if your analog set is connected to cable TV, satellite or a converter box, it will continue to work just fine. Not sure? Visit this interactive website to find out how you can make the switch: www.dtvanswers.com
B uying a converter box is the simplest, most cost-effective way of adapting to this change. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has set aside money to help ensure consumers continue to receive free over-the-air television and is offering up to two coupons (valued at $40

each) for a converter box. Most electronic consumer retailers are carrying various models ranging from $40 to $70. Call1-888-388-2009 or visit www.dtv2009.gov to order a coupon.
Change is good. With digital television, Georgia Public Broadcasting will offer a better quality TV picture and improved sound. If you have a new digital TV set that has an HD tuner, you can receive High Definition Television - GPB plans to air many hours of
PBS and original GPB productions in HDTV providing for stunning quality and crystal clear sound. This change also affords GPB the opportunity to provide
more programming choices and look for these new channels and services to launch this summer.
For the latest GPB digital news , please visit our website at www.gpb.org/digital.

CONSIDERED programming.

The hum of helicopters, shouts from angry protestors, the roar of police motorcycles - these sounds filled the airwaves during the first broadcast. "Today in the nation's capital, it is a crime to be young and have long hair ... " reported NPR's Jeff Kamen as he covered anti-war protest activities taking place throughout Washington, DC.
That first story fit the mold of what would become an NPR trademark. By capturing onthe-street interviews mixed with chants of protesters, All Things Considered took listeners out of their living rooms and cars

Over the course of 90 minutes each day, listeners would hear the stories and voices of the people who make up today's world-from the leaders of nations to everyday citizens-woven seamlessly together. The format brought the news to listeners in a fresh way. One moment found host Susan Stamberg and science reporter Ira Flatow in a dark closet testing whether Wint-0-Green Life Savers sparked when chewed.Another followed Chicago bureau chief Scott Simon through a crowd angered by a Nazi gathering in Chicago's Marquette Park. Yet, no matter what the subject matter, All Things Considered approached it with intelligence, curiosity, and respect.

Reporting style and program format weren't the only areas in which All Things Considered charted new territory. Perhaps most notable was the strong presence of female voices, which many other networks at the time considered not professional enough for broadcast news. In the second year of All Things Considered, Susan Stamberg became the first woman in the U.S. to anchor a national nightly news program.
Women were also featured prominently in subsequent broadcasts. During the Panama Canal Treaty debates in 1978, for the first time in history the U.S. Senate allowed a national network to broadcast live from the Senate floor. NPR sent Linda Wertheimer to anchor the All Things Considered broadcast and provided live gavel-to-gavel coverage. Nina Totenberg and Cokie Roberts also joined the reporting staff and helped create a female force in network broadcast reporting.
Ellen Weiss, former executive producer says, "What defines the show is the variety of reports and features you hear every day;' "There's news , commentary, interviews, and humor .. .there's variety in the places you go, the voices you hear, and the emotions evoked. Beyond being a solid news program, All Things Considered is about what people can relate to personally."
Be sure to join GPB Radio Host Rickey Bevington weekdays at 4 PM for All Things Considered, and be sure to stay tuned as she brings you Georgia news, arts and cultural coverage and commentary during Georgia Gazette each weekday at 6 PM.

As the Nimitz makes its final transit from Hawaii to California, the sailors and Marines on board prepare to return to their homes and families. For those still on board, the "Tiger Cruise" provides a buffer, but there's no such transition for those who fly home early from Hawaii.

AMERICAN MASTERS MARVIN GAVE: WHAT'S GOING ON

His standing among the most enduring 20th-century American musical artists is without question, yet his story is rarely told beyond the tragic circumstances ol his death. Gaye created an intimate style -lull of honesty, integrity, vulnerability- and, essentially, gave the world his autobiography in lyrics and melody. He challenged and changed the face of black music, embodying its evolution from roots in gospel , jazz and rhythm and blues to sophisticated pop and sexually, politically charged soul. Extensive performance footage and insight from Mary Wilson, Smokey Robinson. Gladys Knight, Mas Del, among many others, capture thetone and texture of acareer that still leaves an indelible mark on the musical landscape.
